Coming soon: The Ozzy Osbourne Variety Show

by Brad Trechak, posted Jul 7th 2008 10:21AM
Ozzy OsbourneIn a sure sign of the apocalypse, the variety show concept from the 1970s (such as Donny and Marie and The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour) is making a comeback. Only this time, it stars Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne.

The Fox show is as-of-yet untitled and will be executive-produced by James Sunderland, an exec producer on America's Got Talent where Sharon Osbourne is a judge. The show will be shot in Los Angeles and the plan is to start with a Christmas special.

"The plan is to blend musical perfs by the Osbournes and others with comedy sketches as well as gameshow, audience participation and out-of-studio taped elements", said Mike Darnell, Fox's President of Alternative Entertainment. The show may even have a segment called "The Osbournes Meet The Osbournes" in which Ozzy and family are filmed meeting other families named Osbourne.

If anything, this is going to be The Brady Bunch Variety Hour on acid. It's sort of appropriate that it's going to Fox. Perhaps the theme can be a heavy-metal riff of The Brady Bunch theme song.

Well, I think it sounds great! It would be nice to have a television show addition that is something besides the current norm, namely insipid half hour comedy and murder/rape, abuse/rape/murder, etc. I detect that Brad Trechak and Pete's writing is more about them, how "cute" and sarcastic they can be rather than a sincere reporting on Brad's part and a try at witty sarcasm on Pete's part. Can't the reporting just occur and a wish for success? Perhaps Brad and Pete don't realize, or maybe neither care about Ozzie's place in the pop music/culture. He holds, along with others, a significant place.

Why do I get the feeling that all these awful pitch meetings go like this:

TV exec: Hey, Sharon, Ozzy, great to see you again. Listen, we have this fantastic idea for a new show starring you and the whole family. It's a *variety* hour, with singing, dancing, comedy sketches, audience participation - it'll be absolutely embarrassing yet hilarious!

Ozzy: (something incoherent)

TV exec: Did I mention it pays about a bajillion dollars per episode?

Sharon: We'll do it.

Sharon: We'll do it!

The extra "We'll do it!" was to make sure Ozzy didn't say anything coherent to contradict her decision. ;-)
