Carson Kressley expands his Lifetime empire

Carson KressleyBefore Lifetime snagged Bravo's Project Runway, it got its hands on Queer Eye for the Straight Guy star Carson Kressley. Lifetime tapped Kressley to host the feel-good show How to Look Good Naked, and now it looks like the cable net wants to keep the Kressley train moving by giving him his own talk show.

The standard Monday-Friday talk show format is rare on cable nets, but is in line with Lifetime's plan to change its image from the "woman being beaten, kidnapped, set on fire, but ultimately triumphing in the end" movies/Golden Girls network to something younger and hipper -- basically Bravo with a female slant. Kressley's chat fest is supposed to focus on his talent for fashion and will feature a mix of studio and field segments that feature him offering insight and advice to "everyday" people.

A talk show is a big move for Lifetime, and according to Jessica Samet, the senior VP of reality programming, it may not be a move they would be making at all if they didn't already have Kressley on board. "We don't know that we would do it without him," she said. "He is so articulate and funny, and he is totally accessible. To dive into the talk show world, which is a difficult thing to launch in cable, you need a personality attached that is known. He is perfect for our demo."

In addition to Kressley's talk show and Project Runway, Lifetime is also looking into creating a block of half-hour comedies to add to its original programming roster. The success of its original drama, Army Wives, has already brought new viewers into the Lifetime fold; is it possible that we may have a whole new network on our hands?

Personally, I'm not sold on Lifetime's new direction and I'm really concerned about it ruining Project Runway, which is one of my favorite shows. I'll tune in to Lifetime occasionally, but it's not one of my go-to channels. However, I like what they're trying to do and am definitely open to their changes.

Does the new direction make you want to watch Lifetime, or flip the channel right on by?

Has anyone told Lifetime that Bravo is gay? All of this reminds me of the fat girl trying to marry her "best friend" from college who only has eyes for the best man.
