Shonda Rhimes considering killing off Heigl's character?

by Isabelle Carreau, posted Jul 13th 2008 1:21PM
Grey's AnatomyYes, this is yet another post about behind-the-scenes drama on the Grey's Anatomy set. We have written so many posts on Isaiah Washington, T.R. Knight and Katherine Heigl here at TV Squad that I'm starting to believe there is a clause in the actors' contracts stating that they must make the headlines one way or another every month! This month's Grey's Anatomy drama is once again sponsored by actress Katherine Heigl.

In June, Heigl bowed out of the Emmy race because she was not happy with the storylines given to her character last season. Fans and the press speculated that this also meant she wanted out of the ABC show. However, the actress confirmed she wanted to stay on the show. But what if the producers want her out? According to the latest rumor, that's exactly what they want.

Even if Heigl's character Izzie Stevens is an important part of the show and liked by many fans, Marc Malkin from E! Online reports that the character may be dead to the producers. According to Malkin's sources, Grey's Anatomy's creator Shonda Rhimes is toying with the idea of killing Izzie Stevens this upcoming season because of Katherine Heigl's comments when she took her name out for Emmys consideration. Those of you who want Izzie dead, don't rejoice too quickly because a representative for Shonda Rhimes said "I haven't heard anything about that." Malkin tried to get Heigl's and ABC's sides of the story but both declined to comment.

Personally, I wouldn't mind Izzie gone from the show. I have to side with Heigl on the fact that she didn't get great storylines this season. Actually, seeing her and George on screen made me cringe and Izzie was rather boring this season. If the writers have the same type of storylines in store for her next season, maybe it's time for them to get rid of the character. However, the Alex/Izzie kiss in the season finale was oh so right and I would like to see Izzie and Alex finally become a real couple and try to make it work.

What's your take on this? Should Shonda Rhimes get rid of Izzie Stevens because of how Katherine Heigl acts off the set? Should they keep her on the show and give the actress what she demands: better storylines? Let your voice be heard in comments.

I love Katherine Heigl's character, and her as an actress and I'll be really disapointed if she's killed off. I think when she's given the material she brings a lot of good things to the show, so to think about her being written off so easily bothers me. I like the majority of the characters on the show and would be upset to see a majority of them written off so hopefully this is just publicity!

I think this is another perfect example of the media taking something out of context. Here's the exact quote from Heigl about pulling her name from the Emmy's:

"I did not feel that I was given the material this season to warrant an Emmy nomination and in an effort to maintain the integrity of the academy organization, I withdrew my name from contention. In addition, I did not want to potentially take away an opportunity from an actress who was given such materials."

I don't see a slam to the writers at all! Whatever the reason for not giving her the material, she wasn't given it. Why the media (and yes, I mean you too TVS!!) has to blow everything out of proportion is beyond me!

Gosh, I hope they do kill her off, I liked her until, she got the big ego from doing one movie knocked up, that was a money maker, than she dissed that!! not supposed to bite the hand that feeds her, she will be another David Caruso(when he left nypd Blue)!!!

I think each actor on this show needs to remember that this is basically a night time soap opera. Not every character can get good story all the time, there are front burner and back burner cycles. Heigl had great stuff the year before, time to give someone else a chance.

A season long coma... that was the best comment/suggestion on here.

Got me rolling! LOL!

Heigl wants off the show to do more horrible, but profitable, movies.
Don't kill her off. Make her honor her contract, but put her character in a season long coma. I'm sure she could give an award winning performance just lying there motionless.

i hate her character, and honestly, heigl as a person irks me a bit. something about her is very unapproachable, unlikeable.

so its ok if she's killed off, hope they replace her with someon hot though!
too many fat/ugly ppl on that show!

What is so special about this show? It used to have substance and ABC pushed Shonda Rhimes and her down our throats. She caved when they fired I.Washington. What he said was disgusting, but I miss him and his arrogance. He was a good actor in a show of "so so" actors. The storyline pf Izzie and George was a laugh. They've made George a wuss and if he doesn't stop stuttering and dumb-ass behavior soon, the show will be more laughable than it is right now. It's lost its way and "NO" they shouldn't fire Katherine Heig, just write better episodes for EVERYONE!!!!! Oh, and get rid of Shonda's other show "Private Practice".

I really like Katharine Heigl and her honesty. I think she is so right in that they gave her horrible storylines this season on Grey's Anatomy. Izzie used to be one of my favorite characters but every episode they made her to one crazy thing after the next...first she wanted to be with George..then she didn't...then she saved a deer...then she compeated with Cristina for cardio her new dream...then she didn't want that anymore...Shonda Rhimes should listen to her actors about what they are saying about their characters instead of going for 'shock' value. If they killed off Izzie I would stop watching the show, then maybe her and Denny could have a television series together, Touched by an Angel?

If they kill her off, they are just justifying her comments rather than--I don't know--working hard to write well and prove her wrong?
