Dick Smothers wants to dance, but no one will let him

Dick SmothersAll Dick Smothers wants to do is dance, dance, dance*, but Dancing with the Stars doesn't want him.

The one half of the Smothers Brothers tells TV critic Terry Morrow that he has applied to be on the hit ABC dance reality show three times, but they keep on turning him down. Smothers says that he loves the show and he could keep up with all of the dancing that has to be done (he's 71), but the show won't even give him a chance.

As Morrow says, Smothers is probably too unknown to be a big draw for the show, since he hasn't been on television in years. Maybe they can do a special "TV Legends" episode of the show, and have Smothers be on it, along with Barbara Eden, William Shatner (hey, he's on an ABC show too), Tom Selleck, and Florence Henderson.

I call the show "Dancing with the Morons." I haven't watched it since the first time it was on. If Dick Smothers were on, I'd watch. I will always love both Smothers Brothers.

honestly, the smothers brothers are LEGENDS. and still quite funny. i assume a large part of the audience watching that inane show are older, and i'm sure most would know him.

and craig kilborn is one of the most cloying, annoying tv personalities ever. never liked his version of the daily show, and his talk show died because, frankly, it stank. terrible interviewer. i don't know him personally, but he always comes off as an egomaniac.

And when was the last time Wayne Newton was on television, or Kristi Yamaguchi for that matter?!?! I think they should get BOTH Smothers Brothers to compete against each other!

Too unknown for the youngsters I suppose, but kids only represent a portion of the audience. I assume that's why they've always had diversity in the ages of the competitors. As for "unknown", I had never heard of many of the competitors prior to their stint on DWTS (Josie Maran anyone? Albert Reed? Willa Ford?) so that would be a lame excuse for the show to use in relation to Dick Smothers.

I would definitely enjoy seeing Dick Smothers on the show! He would be great. Age should have nothing to do with it! I certainly know him a lot more than most of the people they have on the show. I think its age discrimination. They only want you if you can shake your booty and show a lot of skin! He should sue ABC!

The Smother Brothers are better known that 1/2 of the people they get to dance on the show. My guess is they(The Show's Producers) feel 71 is too old for the rigorous training it takes. But they should give him a try out. He may be more fit than many of the people they have had on before.

Why on earth do you think no one remembers him? The brothers were here in Florida earlier this year, and had a huge crowd, of which I was one. They are still funny, their songs are great, and it was a great time. Maybe YOU don't remember him, but I assure you, they have a lot of fans out there. And no, not all are geezers, which I'm sure you will say next. Boomers rule.
