Rescue Me: Spelling

by Jonathan Toomey, posted Jul 23rd 2008 1:07AM

Michael Lombardi(M5) "...he's Mikey, OK? He's like the locusts. He's not gonna be right again for like seven years." - Lou

For once, Lou wasn't right. Doesn't really matter though because let's be honest - this wasn't really that funny at all. After the hilarious first few minisodes, and then last week's jaw-dropping finish, this one really fell flat for me.

I mean, c'mon - we all know that Mike is an idiot. Didn't we find out he had dyslexia at one point? Based on that alone, you wouldn't expect him to be able to spell common words. The obvious joke then, is that he can. And he did.

Boring. B-O-R-I-N-G. Boring.

He was able to spell "plethora" (though it was funny how he kept mispronouncing it) and then he spit out the right letters for "asthma" too. Hey, good for him.

But Kenny "Spelling Bee" Shea wouldn't let it die... especially after he, Tommy, Garrity, and Franco were all down $15 each. That's right, they were betting against Mike's spelling aptitude.

So Lou did the one thing that was sure to pressure Mike - he freaked him out. Bet you can't spell your own last name. After some quick talking, a new $1,000 bet, and some mind games... Mike came out with S-I-L-L-E-T-T-E and not S-I-L-L-E-T-T-I. He spelled his own last name wrong. Is that actually possible?

Thoughts...

  • Leary in the Boston Celtics tee-shirt. Love it.
  • Do you think Lou burning his hands on the hot griddle was part of the script or just an accident?
  • This makes me laugh -- the FX press website, where I downloaded the photo above, has Mike's last name spelled "Siletti." Wrong.

Here's the description for next week's minisode since there was no preview...
Sandwich: The guys spoil Lou's lunchtime ritual, so he lectures them on life's three certainties: sex, death, and sandwiches.

Knowing how much Lou loves food, this one could have some potential...

It's harder to spell...

I love it too! I thought the idea of these minisodes was stupid, but I'm loving it!

I thought it was pretty good too. Not the best, but good.

The whole idea of these webisodes is so good, little morsels of perfect Rescue Me comedy without the bother of the continuing storylines to get in the way. I think they should do this every year.

Ranking the minisodes so far, I would put this one second, right behind last week's. I thought it was pretty damn good.

what? this was by far the funniest one. this is the first one that i actually liked. i have to assume that you are not a compulsive gambler because if you were there was no way you find this boring. predictable, maybe, but not boring.

Since when does being dyslexic imply that someone is an idiot? It's a learning disorder, and doesn't imply a lack of intelligence on any level. Einstein was dyslexic and struggled in school as a child, but he was obviously not an idiot.

Amen to that. As a special education teacher, there is simply nothing to suggest that this specific learning disability has anything to do with one's intelligence. Shame on Jon for suggesting such.
