Weeds: Yes I Can

by Erin Martell, posted Jul 29th 2008 12:26PM
Hunter Parrish and Julie Bowen(S04E07) Nancy hasn't completely left her old self behind, has she? After only a short time at Maternity World, she was ready to take on her old operation. Many of the pre-Ren Mar folks emerged from various parts of California. I was strangely excited to see the Botwins' old housekeeper, Lupita, along with Sanjay (now a father to Clinique's baby) and Marvin (10 pounds lighter).

Have the good old days of pot dealing returned, or will Nancy have trouble working within someone else's organization?

Guillermo's face when he was delivering the pot worries me. I can't tell if he's upset because Nancy went over his head, or if her power play means that he's losing status within the organization. Either way, things don't look good. Guillermo could try to regain control of his employee, or he could lose status within Esteban's business. Nancy needs to find away to make this up to him. He got her out of hot water with the bikers last season and brought her into the "company." How much longer will he tolerate Nancy's disloyalty? Will he get back at her by messing with her salespeople? Nancy was a little too confident when she told Marvin not to worry about territory disputes with Guillermo.

Mark my words: Nancy's addiction to trouble will ruin her someday. It's clear that she's not in this business just for the money. She's making a significant, unnamed sum working in a low-risk job. Most people would be thrilled with this arrangement. Perhaps she's not satisfied being a mid-level employee in someone else's operation. She wants the high that comes with being in charge and the constant possibility of losing it all. Nancy looked relaxed and happy as she reassembled her team. I guess her breakthrough a few weeks back was short-lived.

I'm glad that Celia's criminal charges were finally dealt with, but that storyline fell flat. It seemed like they brought Till back merely for the surprise of seeing him in bed with the DEA agent. Is that really it for Till? Perhaps he isn't so determined to arrest Guillermo now that he's less lonely. A little romance can make a big difference on your mood; Nancy demonstrated that this week. She was extremely (and hilariously) cranky at the start of the episode, and I can't blame her. No one wants to watch a naked man cut her off on the way to the bathroom. I couldn't believe what I was seeing at first. All it took was a spanking from Esteban to put a smile on her face.

I am so disappointed in Shane. He kept the infamous bowler hat photos and "scratched his fleas" in bed after looking at them. Why? The mere thought of the inevitable discussion between mother and son is enough to make me cringe. I hope that, instead of Nancy, Andy discovers the photos and has a funnier heart-to-heart with his nephew. Sock Talk 2.0!

My favorite lines of the night:

  • Nancy calling the guys "Delta pledges."
  • "You're the mom-and-pop shop that got swallowed by the megacorp." --Guillermo's warning to Nancy
  • Andy's spontaneous remodeling rant

Next week--Nancy has lunch with Esteban, Andy and Doug officially become coyotes, and Nancy dodges bullets.

Who were you most excited to see?
Sanjay, Clinique, and their giant baby.100 (25.4%)
Lupita36 (9.2%)
Marvin47 (12.0%)
I wish Conrad and Heylia had come back.196 (49.9%)
Other14 (3.6%)

Mr. Beast makes interesting points. That part with Shane at the end was WEIRD. I suppose it is pedophilia if he's still two weeks shy of 18.

Here's what I want to know: Was that Hunter Parrish naked or a body double? I'm wavering towards body double, and considering that we couldn't see his face at all it could have been someone who looks nothing like him. Then again, I think that I vaguely recall Parrish talking about a nude scene?
Either way, DAMN! That was hot. I mean, all of his scenes with Julie Bowen were, but especially that scene.

I just watched episode seven and was disgusted. I agree with the person that said that although weeds has tested a lot of television barriers, they've crossed one which I wish they hadn't. I personally find this latest season uninteresting. It's time to put Botwin in jail and end the show.

i agree with those who say they're not enjoying this season... and not simply because it's 'different'...

the conceit of the show, in its original form, had nancy as a character in a situation outside of her control, trying to find a way to get by... she was trying to make a place of calm in the chaos her life had become after the passing of judah...

in each subsequent season, -nancy- has become the progenitor of chaos, no more so than in this season where she has repeatedly created chaotic (and deadly dangerous) situations for herself and her family...

and i think the creator and writers do a disservice by making the "mayor" seem cute and harmless... or by 'softening' up any of the other characters involved in the drug trade... the Sopranos was ultimately successful to the very end by never letting the audience forget that these people were capable of extreme violence and brutality... in the first few seasons of Weeds i felt that the potential for violence was real... this season, especially, while the potential for death is probably greater than its ever been for nancy and her family, the writers are creating situations that are all too 'cute'... it messes with the audience's head in ways that can not pay off in any kind of a satisfying manner... but when in doubt, throw in a little MILF action and call it an episode...

i'm thinking (hoping) that this is the last season for Weeds.. it has definitely jumped the proverbial shark.

This new season is turning out to be all sorts of wrong. There aren't any likable characters as this point. I liked it better when it was about drug-dealing in suburbia and not weird sex and kids getting off on old snapshots of their mothers.

I still think the show is awesome and not just because Nancy is hot as hell.

I'm going to say it out loud. I'm not enjoying this season as much as the previous. I don't find it funny. It is darker and not pleasantly so. I am sure I am alone in this, but I had to say it in public. If I can see practically every character naked in this episode, I can certainly bare my soul.

The 'flea scratching' occured before the discovery of Nancy's photos. Weeds broke alot of TV barriers but I don't think imaginary incest should ever be one of them.

Sorry, Ivan, I just watched it and not only was it at the very end of the episode, he was holding her nude pics in his hands while he was doing it.

What was up with Doug asking Nancy 'Want me to whip out my Jeremy Piven'? Was that a shot at Entourage or JP or just a friendly joke towards them? I'm not sure. I wonder if on Entourage they will return the favor and Ari Gold will get revenge.

Nancy's should be more concerned about Guillermo's inevitable retribution. Even just sticking to the pot (as opposed to the other drugs she resisted getting involved in), she is in at a level where people will be nasty.

The kid with the pictures...skeevy.
