Dan Marino will NOT be Dancing with the Stars

by Allison Waldman, posted Aug 7th 2008 2:43PM
D MarinoI knew it! In fact, in the comments to Bob's post about who was rumored to be booked for the new season of Dancing with the Stars, I wrote the following: "I love Dan Marino. He's always been one of my all time favorites, but he was known for his arm and quick release, not his footwork!! If Danny is one of the contestants, only his blue eyes will keep him on past round one. I think In Touch is out of touch about this name!"

Well, today Dan Marino's spokesman officially denied the rumor. While Dan was watching the Miami Dolphins scrimmage, his rep told the press that for every year since the show began, Dancing with the Stars has invited Dan Marino to find the dancer in his soul, and every year he's turned them down. Good for Dan.

As Clint Eastwood put it -- in Dirty Harry -- "A man's got to know his limitations."

Listen, Dan Marino is a superstar already. He was a great quarterback with an amazing arm and his Hall of Fame induction was one of the most popular in recent history -- standing room only.

He's also a good TV personality -- easy-going, but not big on controversial statements. He's fun every Sunday in football season on the CBS pre-game show. In South Florida, where I live, he's still the biggest celebrity athlete around (no offense to Dwayne Wade, Jason Taylor, or anyone on the spunky Florida Marlins).

Marino also owns restaurants, produces a line of wines, and has lots of other causes and interests. He's very philanthropic and has a great image. Therefore, Dancing with the Stars really wouldn't have helped him much. In fact, he would have only made himself look ridiculous. Like I said, good for Dan!
