Did you hear the one about Martha Stewart?

Martha in blueMost people don't turn in to Fine Living Network for laughs, but all that's about to change on September 16, at least for as long as a new comedy series called Whatever, Martha! runs. Imagine, if you will, an entire clip show culled from The Martha Stewart Show.

Now, picture a couple of chicks sitting around and making fun of said clips. That's the concept for Whatever, Martha!, and if this idea reminds you of Mystery Science Theater 3000 -- sans puppets -- that's a good thing.

Fine Living has gotten Martha's blessing for the show. Heck, she's leading the laughs by allowing the clips to be used. Also the two women who'll be presenting the show and mocking her every half-hour are close to her: Alexis Stewart, her daughter, and Jennifer Koppelman Hutt, whose father -- Charles Koppelman -- is the chairman of Martha's media empire.

So, this is all in the family for the Stewart camp, and whatever jokes, cracks and observations made by the women will be with the Martha Stewart seal of approval.

This web of connections makes me wonder just how much Alexis and Jennifer can skewer Martha? I mean the best of this kind of comedy comes from irreverence, poking fun at the establishment. In this case, that's Ms. Stewart herself. Just how far will they really be allowed to go in their joshing?

Another potential problem is citing Mystery Science Theater 3000 as their inspiration. You have to be really, really fun to match those guys. Really funny. I think if Whatever, Martha! can reach Talk Soup level we'll be lucky.

According to the announcement, Martha's publicist was shocked to hear that the comedy was actually going to be shown on Fine Living. Sheila Feren, the PR person, said during the interview, "Oh, my God. Please tell me this is not happening."

Hmm, interesting. It makes me think that for really sharp satire of Martha Stewart, check out Saturday Night Live or MadTV. I'm not saying that I won't give Whatever, Martha! a try. I will.

I'm just doubtful that Martha Stewart's going to be gung ho about any show that makes her the butt of the joke again and again and again.

My wife and I decided to watch...as she hates Martha Stewart, and I love her. We saw two episodes and laughed until we cried. Some of the sexual inuendos were in poor taste, but the rest of the comments were unbelievably funny...why? Because they are thoughts that everyone thinks but never says...at least not in public. Clean it up gals, this could be a gem of a show.

I think Martha deserves a good-natured ribbing. I used to have a special hatred for the M.S., but most mainstream jokes always seemed unnecessarily mean. So, I think people affiliated with her her family-wise/professionally, knowing her reputation, will have more to mock, won't restrain themselves as people will call them out on it, and will mock her in such a way that they aren't the typical 'Hillary Clinton'-esque jokes -

Alexis and Jennifer have their own radio show on Martha's Sirius channel. They've been doing the funny show thing for awhile. They aren't comedians (or try to be). It is more snarky than anything.
