The Daily Show: August 11, 2008 - VIDEOS

Rob Riggle"Super News Blaster Breaking News Update": Reminding grumpy Republicans everywhere that the Daily Show considers the unfaithful on both sides of the aisle fair game, the show took on the latest sex scandal to rock the Hill. As it turns out, the allegations about Senator John Edwards having an affair with his former videographer were true. True! Over the weekend, I was briefly intrigued, but then found myself staring intently at her interesting fashion choices. I recall seeing her in a black top with a sequined peace sign at one point. Classy. As for me, superficial? Boy, am I!

The Senator's weak attempts to defend himself seemed twice as bad punctuated by Jon's looks of disapproval. Case in point: "First of all, it happened during a period after she was in remission after cancer."

"Super News Blaster Breaking News Update: Ass-shattering News-plosion": I bet John Edwards has never been so super-thankful to hear about a deadly conflict on the other side of the world, creating a media diversion. Russia and Georgia (not the peachy one) are fighting, as the rest of the world is duking it out in the Beijing Olympics. I've been steadily watching the Olympics since the opening ceremonies and have been anxiously waiting to see what TDS had to say about President Bush's behavior.

The camera caught Bush looking super-bored several times through the opening ceremonies. As I recall, each time NBC cut to the President, he was chatting with Russia's Putin, checking his watch, or being reluctantly enthusiastic for Iraq's athletes. I saw him pay attention once, peering through is binoculars. But really, he could have been looking anywhere. Anyway, TDS focused more on his activities during the actual games and his interview with Bob Costas. I definitely wasn't expecting to see him, right as I was getting ready to watch some kids do some deadly flips in the air and possibly snap their necks. They didn't mention that slightly bitchy brush-off at the end of the interview, but they caught his remarks about China's need for religion and "I don't see America having problems." At least he played nice with the US athletes.

"Chasing the Dragon": Senior Olympic Correspondent Rob Riggle filed his first report from the Beijing Olympics about... himself. God, it really is adorable seeing Rob running around Beijing, towering about the Chinese people. The appearances from gymnast Kerri Strug and CBS Sports' Jim Nantz were really well done. And if you're one of those people that needs to look around the room to see if there's a Chinese person laughing at that joke about Chinese stereotypes before reacting... I laughed (really hard) at the ending. Actually, this was probably one of Rob's funniest reports. I'm looking forward to more throughout the week.

The night's guest was Ron Suskind, author of The Way of the World: A Story of Truth and Hope in an Age of Extremism. Mr. Suskind's book makes some pretty heavy accusations, saying that this administration forged letters to link people and events in the Middle East in order to justify the invasions. This interview was pretty interesting, and Mr. Suskind did a fine job of rolling with Jon's jokes, even managing to throw in some of his own. By the way, "it's in the book."

Jon/Stephen: Stephen Colbert is a giving man, who does things for charity. Sort of. Bonus, character break. Moment of Zen: Bernie Mac. RIP.

I don't usually find Riggle very funny, but his report was very good. I'm confused by the in China-in studio dynamic, though. Did he tape all his pieces in China before the games started?

Most likely.

Yeah, I guess so. Maybe they couldn't afford to stay at peak time with all the "big" media from all over the globe hanging around.

Shame, 'cause I was looking forward to some Riggle/athlete interaction.

Ok when Riggle made the joke with the smog I thought about what would later on be in the review.

I'm such an Annie-Wu fanboy. Gawd...

It was obvious that Bush was joking, but there was just the slightest undertone of "omg costas stfu" that made me (and the people watching with me) laugh.

I can't find video, though, which would have let you see Bush's body language.
