Celebs plan to say funny, classic things at Emmys

EmmyThis news makes me cringe more than a little.

At this year's Emmy Awards (September 21 on ABC), celebrities will utter famous catch phrases and lines from 60 years of television.

Doesn't this immediately sound just awful? The scripts for these award shows are often cringe-worthy anyway, the forced humor and banter between two people presenting at the same time, and now they're going to make them say famous lines from TV shows? I can just see Helen Mirren up on stage saying, "And the award for Lead Actress In A Television Series goes to...Glenn Close!...Oh, and by the way, Whatchoo talkin' bout, Willis?"

Hopefully the lines will be put into some sort of context and not just randomly uttered. I mean, wouldn't it just be terrible in the stars came out on stage throughout the show for special segments on catch phrases, said them ("Kiss My Grits"), and got some weird round of applause from the audience?

I think the best forced banter I ever saw during the Genie Awards (or was it the Junos?) when they had three women on the stage, including the blonde from Degrassi TNG, and the banter is about how they're all be super competitive up there to try and look the best and get the most lines, and it was a bad idea. Then someone actually does step on the blonde one's line and she just turns to her and goes f*** you!

They already did this on the Emmy show about 10 years ago, give or take. Back then they were able to get most of the original stars to do their own CPs. Maybe someone saved their tape of it - it was the opening spot in the show - but all I can call to mind was the Big Three-Part Finish: Walter Cronkite: "And that's the way it is." Peter Falk: "Oh, and one more thing..." Peter Graves (holding tape player): "This tape will self-destruct in five seconds." (Tape flashes - music up - cue announcer.)

I hope they at least include "Laura, I'm gonna punch you in the face!" from "That's My Bush."
