What to Watch Monday, Aug. 18

by Kim Potts, posted Aug 18th 2008 6:00AM
'The Hills'
(10PM, MTV) 4th season premiere
Since we've probably already seen most of season four play out in the tabloids, for the purpose of being able to enjoy one of the guiltiest of TV's guilty pleasures, we're just gonna go ahead and pretend we didn't.

Nope, didn't see all those stories about Lauren and her BFF/roommate Lo fighting with fellow roomie Audrina. Know nothing about Speidi and their nefarious plans for a wedding/purchasing a mansion/having Heidi sing in public.

And we know nothing about the continuing charges that the reality show is decidedly less than real. Okay, maybe we've heard a little something about that one ...

'Into the Unknown with Josh Bernstein'
(10PM, Discovery) series premiere
On the opener of this new series investigating historical mysteries, J.B. uncovers the truth about gladiators, and it turns out that they didn't all look like Russell Crowe. Of course, they probably didn't toss telephones at your head, either. You know, since they didn't have telephones in gladiator times.

'Thank You, Mr. President: Helen Thomas at the White House'
(9PM, HBO)
Sure, Babs Walters has her spot on 'The View' on which to pimp her recent autobio, but pioneering journalist and White House correspondent Thomas -- who's covered every President since Kennedy -- is the subject of her own HBO documentary.

'The Closer'
(9PM, TNT)
A 'tween-aged killer? Wow, even 'Degrassi' hasn't gone there.

'The Middleman'
(10PM, ABC Family)
Wendy and Middleman try to prevent a vampire comeback by buying Vlad the Impaler's ventriloquist puppet, but when the little dummy steals someone's soul, he becomes real and tears off on a havoc-wreaking spree.

'Weeds'
(10PM, Showtime)
Nancy is the queen of secret lives, so it really shouldn't come as any surprise to her that Esteban is secretly multi-tasking with his tunnel, should it?

'New York Goes to Hollywood'
(10PM, VH1)
New York gets hired to shoot a commercial for a Japanese energy drink. What are we missing here? New York is big in Japan? Is this like the Germans loving Hasselhoff?

What's on tomorrow: 'The Cleaner,' 'Secret Life of the American Teenager' and more
