Stump the King: The Alvin Show - VIDEO

by Paul Goebel, posted Aug 25th 2008 11:42AM

Clyde Crashcup & LeonardoI got a great letter this week from a fan named Harold Dickinson.

He writes, "I'm trying to get the name of a cartoon from the late 50's or early 60's. It had two characters who -- at least in my memory -- remind me of Penn and Teller. The one character was tall and bombastic, the other was shorter and never spoke- although he would whisper to the other character. I believe the smaller character was named Leonardo- but I wouldn't swear to it."

Well, I'm sure most of you recognize the show in question as a segment on The Alvin Show featuring Clyde Crashcup and his assistant Leonardo.

Harold's question reminds me of a funny thing about Crashcup. The folks who were fans of Clyde generally didn't care for Alvin and his brothers, therefore they often can't remember where they first saw him.

Here's a great clip of the inventor and his assistant.

Now for this week's question...

Aside from The Christmas Song, what other novelty hit was written by Ross Bagdasarian?

Congratulations KMF! You got the right answer!

He wrote/cowrote a couple of songs but I think Witch Doctor is the one Paul's referring to.

Interesting piece of trivia: Ross Bagdasarian is in Hitchcock's Rear Window. He played the songwriter, one of the people that Jimmy Stewart spied on.
