Greek season two -- an early look

Greek"Our friendship can be tested anywhere." - Rusty to Calvin

Since it's July 9, 2007, premiere on ABC Family, Greek has been one of weekly TV guilty pleasures. I've been enjoying its light and fun stories as well as the evolving and imploding relationships and friendships between the characters.

Having had the chance to read a few spoilers about the upcoming season these past few weeks, it looked like Greek would be as fun to watch as it was in its first season. However, something can look good on paper and turn out quite differently on the screen. Luckily, it is not the case for Greek; at least not according to the season premiere, which I had the chance to watch.

Slight spoilers coming up!

The season premiere of ABC Family's Greek has all the elements we are used to find in episodes of the series:
  • Friendships and relationships are put to the test (especially the friendship between Rusty and Calvin).
  • There are competitions between sororities and fraternities.
  • Cappie reveals something about his education (this time around, we learn that he is an "Olympic historian").
  • Rusty ends up in some trouble.
  • Rebecca is bitchy and puts on a tough-girl façade.
  • Cappie and Evan feud.
  • Casey tries to be a good president.
In order to make all these elements play out, the theme of the episode is "Greek Week Olympiad." I wonder where they got the idea to air an episode about Olympics this year? Nonetheless, the theme brings a lot of fun to the episode especially when the fraternities must come up with a cheer leading routine! (Just imagine Beaver in a cheerleader outfit!)

The episode picks up a few days after spring break. Even if the Season 1 finale didn't end on huge cliffhangers, the questions we were left with are quickly answered. We may not see Senator Logan in the premiere but we learn, through Rebecca, what has been going on. The latter must also deal with the fact that a video of her actions on stage was leaked on the web. Let's say that Senator Logan and the ZBZ sisters are not happy with that footage. But when a sister is in trouble, sisters rally up to help her out. Yes, even if said sister is Rebecca Logan.

As expected, the main storyline is that of Calvin and Rusty's forbidden friendship. Even if that story has been dealt with many times before, it's still interesting to see them work through adversity and rules forbidding them, especially during Greek Week, to hang out. Without spoiling it too much, the difficulties Calvin and Rusty must face this week let to Rusty giving a heartfelt speech that will help break down the barriers his friendship is facing.

Don't expect the season premiere to be earth shattering or really original. However, it's as entertaining and enjoyable as usual, especially since Charisma Carpenter returns as Tegan. The upcoming season will also mark the return of Lizzi and Michael while introducing new characters played by Michael Rady and Carol Potter.

Greek's second season premieres on Tuesday, August 26 at 9 p.m. ET/PT. It will air every Tuesday at the same time on ABC Family.

Part of the problem is this isn't really the 1st episode of season 2.. due to the strike the first 3 or 4 episodes of season 2 were added to season 1.
