The Daily Show team must be exhausted. Last week was Tuesday through Friday on-location coverage of the Democratic National Convention in Colorado, and this week is the same from the Republican National Convention in Minnesota. I can't even imagine how new mommy-again Samantha Bee has been handling this, returning at the busiest time in months.
Sam pulled in a quick weather report, kicking of an evening of Gustav-related jokes. It felt like this episode was packed with wonky edits and timing. Or maybe people Minnesota just have really strange reaction times and audiences have a weird hive mentality that is so strong that they can stop applauding at the same split second.
Correspondents Jason Jones, John Oliver and Wyatt Cenac reported from the convention, shedding some light on the heartbreaking devastation in the lives of all these rich, white people. I think it was sometime around here that I realized that this entire episode was going to have more Gustav than RNC. And how long did it take for Jason to find someone that was enough of a jerk to call people in the direct line of Gustav, still reeling from the effects of Katrina, "some people are getting rained on"? Seriously.
Senior Political Analyst Aasif Mandvi then went on to reveal the RNC's week-long theme, "Give Us One More Chance, This Time We Won't Fuck It Up", and shared that the hurricane was actually a planned event by the Republicans. Man, they just never ran out of Gustav material, did they?
The night's guest was NBC/MSNBC's Brian Williams, or BriWi as some affectionately call him. There was virtually no talk about the RNC, just a lot of Gustav and silly back-and-forth. Mr. Williams is always a lot of fun on TDS, and I'm sure he surprises people whenever he appears on shows like this or Late Night with Conan O'Brien or Saturday Night Live, because he really is a hilarious guy. I didn't even care that I didn't learn anything from this interview, just because I like BriWi so much. In fact, if Jon is to ever take a sick day, I say the team should kidnap Mr. Williams and have him fill in for one episode. Why should he have to do real news when he can do features like "Dick Move of the Week"?
Moment of Zen: President Bush shared his thoughts about energy independence and Gustav. Yes, more Gustav.
