If you like Swingtown, you might like BiCoastal

Showtime logoSo Mike Kelley, the creator of CBS' Swingtown, has a new show in the works called BiCoastal. From that title, can you guess what the show is about?

Exactly.

BiCoastal will air on Showtime, and is about a husband and father in Los Angeles who finds himself falling in love with a man who lives in New York City. Something tells me that the Parents Television Council is already making picket signs even as I type this. Or maybe they're just using the old ones, crossing out NYPD Blue and replacing it with BiCoastal.

It would be easy to say that Kelley is treading the same waters here, but that's not exactly true. Sure, they both involve sex and marriage and relationships outside of those marriages, but I think that's where the similarities end. The only thing I wonder is if this new project will mean that Swingtown is dead after this season. Not that both shows couldn't exist, but I just wonder if Kelley would want to do two shows that might seem similar to some viewers, and I also wonder if Showtime - one of the networks that could take Swingtown off of CBS' hands - would want both shows.

Yeah, this does have me worried a bit about SWINGTOWN...though why can't Kelley produce two shows at once? It can be done.

Also, I don't see the similarity between the shows. One is modern day, the other is retro. One is about several married couples involved in hetero-only couple-swapping, and the other is about one guy living a dual (and bisexual) lifestyle?

Both sound like fun. Thank god Kelley is getting back onto pay channels, where the PTC cannot touch his work.

You mentioning the PTC and NYPD Blue picket signs reminds me of when I was dating this holyroller in the early 90's. She told me ABC was coming out with this new police drama and it had to be stopped. She showed me a transcript of that show and I remember telling her that we needed more of that on tv. It sounded great to me. Needless to say we didn't last too much longer after that.
