TV Squad Soap Report: Baby mama fever

by Allison Waldman, posted Sep 4th 2008 2:01PM
TV squad soapWhen I heard about the pregnancy, I was shocked. It was so unexpected, such a surprise, a complete unplanned occurrence that had me scratching my head and wondering what was going on. No, I'm not talking about the revelation that John McCain's choice for vice president, Governor Sarah Palin's unmarried teenaged daughter is pregnant.

I'm talking about Guiding Light's Reva Shayne's stunning discovery that she's having a baby well into her 40's and after a near-fatal bout with breast cancer.

Seriously, I was floored by that turn in the storyline. The writers had me and every other viewer fearful that Reva's breast cancer had returned. On the brink of her marrying Jeffrey, Reva learned that the drugs she'd been taking had actually acted like fertility pills and, bada-bing, bada-boom, Reva's having a baby.

This isn't the only miracle-like conception on the soap scene. On The Bold and the Beautiful, sweet Katie Logan, recent recipient of a heart transplant, was literally at death's door because her body was rejecting the new organ. She chose to have a one-time thing with Nick, just once, because she believed that she was going to die. Well, she didn't and -- wonder of wonders -- Nick magical lovemaking resulted in a pregnancy.

Implausible, you say. Impossible? Yes, it would seem, but it sure makes for a wild storyline. There are all kinds of complications because of this baby growing inside her. Why, just today, when Katie told Brooke about how it came to pass, big sister Brooke slapped Katie right in the face! Whoa, doesn't Brooke know that Katie's still recovering from heart transplant surgery?

It's amazing that Robin's pregnancy on General Hospital is actually quite normal. That is if you think an HIV positive woman having a baby is common place. While GH has been careful to acknowledge Robin's HIV status and the problems inherent with giving birth, the way she became pregnant was really the twist in the story. Robin went to the sperm bank to get a baby daddy, only to discover that her boyfriend/lover and maybe fiancee Patrick is, in fact, the father.

Over on The Young and the Restless, I'm having doubts about Chloe's bun in the oven. She claims that Cane's the father, based on one drunken night in a car that he has blacked out of his memory. Chloe's hardly a reliable source, especially since it's just been revealed that she's Kate, Esther's daughter. Yes, Esther, Kay's maid for the last 20 years or so. Cane's had DNA tests done, but they only prove he could be the baby's father. Watch, this baby is going to have an interesting back story.

Of all the baby mama dramas going on, there is one that really reflects the Briston Palin story is on One Life to Live. Starr Manning is 16 years old. Her strict father preached a form of abstinence -- he threatened to kill her boyfriend if he had sex with her. Starr didn't listen and she and Cole made love and she became pregnant. She knew about contraception and still didn't use a condom -- a fact that haunts her now and for which she berates herself. She considered abortion, but when Cole stopped her, Starr briefly contemplated marrying her beau.

Just like Bristol Palin is doing with Levi Johnston now. It's eerie how OLTL headwriter Ron Carlivati has nailed this story, really, everything but the end. See, he's writing a different outcome for Starr. No wedding bells for Ms. Manning. Instead, Starr has shown a streak of maverick independence by choosing to not marry Cole and instead give her baby to Marcie, a woman who vied with her father over custody of an adopted child. It's very complicated, but good storytelling.

In fact, all these baby dramas have been arresting and interesting, even the outrageous ones. I can't wait to see how GL's Reva Shayne is going to knock off the beer and the booze.

Actually, Robin on GH picked out a donor online, but she never had the procedure. She found out she was pregnant before any procedure was performed when she had her last physical before getting started.

Why did Brooke bitchslap Katie? because you conveniently didn't mention the fact the Katie got pregnant from Nick, Who is married to Bridget, Brooke's daughter.

It was Bridget who took Katie in to her home to recover, it was Bridget who found the cure after her body rejected the organ, and it was Bridget that sent Nick to be with Katie after she saw Katie pining over him.

Dumb and Annoying Katie sleeping with Nick is an insult, especially after she was presented as the "Moral" character.

Another possibility is the show trying to please the viewers, who've been complaining on Heater Tom hijacking the show with her stupid and annoying character.
