Hellboy asks: "Will the TV camera add ten pounds to my Right Hand of Doom?"
Guillermo del Toro is a busy guy. Aside from helming the much anticipated The Hobbit prequel films to the blockbuster Lord of the Rings trilogy, he's got so many films on his schedule that he's practically booked through 2017. But what does that have to do with television, you say? Well, Variety wrote this big old long article about the esteemed del Toro, and one of the last topics discussed was the possibility of a third Hellboy movie. The second didn't achieve the success domestically as the first film but has performed well. What's kind of cool to consider is that buried in all that text is the gem that the studio is possibly considering a TV series for Hellboy to keep him in front of his fanbase until such a film could be made. Creator Mike Mignola has developed tons of stories for Hellboy in the world of comics, and possibly even more for B.P.R.D. (Bureau for Paranormal Research and Development).
I'd be thrilled to see either property (or both) developed for a television series. If ever something could capture the tone of a Buffy it would be a Hellboy or B.P.R.D. television series. I'm not sure if Ron Perlman would be the guy for it if Sons of Anarchy does well over at FX and it's hard to imagine anyone else in the roll but there are just so many story possibilities and characters that fill the Hellboy Universe.
Maybe they could go the route of the Indiana Jones property many years back and do Young Hellboy. Hell, the guy was "born" in the '40s so there's a lot of ground that could be covered. They could maybe do like New Amsterdam and have flashbacks to various times in Hellboy's life. Now I'm getting all excited about the possibilities here and they're probably not even going to do it! Hell, do it animated! I want to see Roger in all his homunculus glory, complete with crotch door knocker.
