What to Watch Weekend, Sept. 6-7

by Kim Potts, posted Sep 6th 2008 5:00AM
'True Blood'
(Sun., 9PM, HBO) series premiere
You've gotta hand it to 'Six Feet Under' creator Alan Ball for one of the season's most clever new drama premises: Vampires no longer thirst for human blood, thanks to Tru Blood, a synthetic drink available at the vamps' local supermarket.

That leaves the undead free to (try) to join the mainstream ... if curious, but suspicious humans will allow it. Bayou waitress Sookie (Anna Paquin) is certainly willing, especially when vamp hottie Bill walks into her bar.

But Bill and his kind have a new concern: while vampires are off human blood, humans have discovered that drinking vampire blood makes for a great high, meaning the hunters have now become the hunted.

'MTV Video Music Awards'

(Sun., 8PM, MTV)
Rumors persist that Britney will make an appearance. Us, we're watching to get a preview of just how funny VMA presenter and Olympic god (and next week's 'Saturday Night Live' host) Michael Phelps will be.

'Entourage'
(Sun., 10, HBO) 5th season premiere
With Vince and Turtle hiding out in Mexico while Eric tries to spin the bad reviews for 'Medellin,' TV actor Drama is now the gang's big star ... though his new diva attitude may make his success short-lived.

'America United: In Support of Our Troops'
(Sun., 9PM, ABC)
Janet Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Kathy Griffin and Ne-Yo are among the stars who salute the troop in this special, which also includes profiles of some of the brave men and women in uniform. But really ABC, didja have to schedule this for the same night as the VMAs?

'Ice Road Truckers'

(Sun., 9PM, History Channel) 2nd season finale
Someone gets kicked off the ice in the finale ... and it could be neck-and-neck load leaders Hugh or Eric.

'Sandhogs'
(Sun., 10PM, History Channel) series premiere
In History Channel's continuing efforts to own the dangerous jobs reality show genre, this series follows New York City construction workers who toil on underground projects.

'Cops'
(Sat., 8PM, Fox) 21st season premiere
To celebrate the big 21st birthday, the show heads back to where it all began -- the Broward County, Florida sheriff's department. Should be a whole new generation of perps by now.

'The Locator'
(Sat., 9PM, WE) series premiere
Man reuniting long-lost loved ones every week ... Note to self: Buy economy size box of Kleenex at Costco.

What's on Monday: 'Terminator,' 'CMA Musical Festival' and more
