Fringe: The Same Old Story

Fringe: The Same Old Story(S01E02) "If you've read my file, then you know the truth about Peter's medical history." -- Dr. Walter Bishop

Ok, let's start with that quote. What the heck do you think he's talking about? That maybe Peter is a clone or something? Seriously, that was probably the most interesting thing about this episode, and it happened at the very last second. I guess that's what they want -- to leave us hanging, so we'll be back for more next week.

I have mixed emotions about this episode. On the one hand, it seemed all over the place. We had the main plot about -- SPOILERS AHEAD -- the baby that aged at a rapid rate and died, the killer on the loose who's stealing peoples' pituitary glands so he can stay young, the doctor who refused to talk about his previous cloning experiments, Massive Dynamic's Nina trying to recruit Olivia ... it all seemed a little scattered to me.

Aside from Dr. Bishop's ending words about Peter's medical history, my favorite part of this episode was when he removed the eye of the girl who died and was able to pinpoint the last thing she saw by projecting her retinal history, so to speak, onto a screen, thus helping Olivia and Peter track down the killer.

Scenes like that make me wonder if these things are in the works for real. Like, is someone working on this technology? Is it even possible? And are there people out there cloning armies?

The little scenes between the three main players are fun, too: Walter and Peter living together, Peter and Olivia making a tiny connection, Walter happily signing away his rights to the feds while Peter vehemently balks at the prospect, Walter fiddling with the seat warmer in the car ("It warms your ass! It's wonderful").

And then there's the cow. She and Walter seem to have a little connection going there. Really, all of this was a lot more interesting to me than the case itself.

And now, here's my question for all of you: At the end, Walter was lulling himself to sleep by counting numbers and Peter was singing, "Row, Row, Row Your Boat," and then it cut to to the scene with the three guys lying on slabs in a lab setting. What do you think it meant?

I played it back on DVR and paused the scene. Although I couldn't see the guy in the middle, the guys on either side of him looked like twins. So maybe it was a cloning experiment that Walter was remembering...? Which brings me back to my original question: Is Peter a clone?

To those of you complaining about the fact that every case revolves around something the doctor was working on in the past and the answers can be had at Massive Dynamics, don't forget that his colleague stole his research and had him committed, then started the company using his research.

Now he has tons of money and resources and can have the technology perfected.

And stuff will escape from the lab and need to be tracked down.

As far as the answers go, let the show run itself out. You don't read the last page of a mystery, you don't skip to the end of the movie, don't complain about the end of the show - its been 2 episodes!

Relax and be entertained, or turn it off and write your own show - either way, you need to get over it.

Hello!!!....

...The title of this episode is "The Same Old Story." I can't believe no one commented on that--that I saw anyway. That title has to be a little tongue in check, since the writers have to know they are just recycling old X-files. On one hand, its bad: its unoriginal, its cheap, it feels insulting in a way. On the other hand, this show could be a big hit for years to come. Just think, all the writers have to do is flip through an X-Files episode guide and decide which story do they want to run through the Lost/Alias filter this week.

Nothing anymore is completely original? Well, I have an example that I think contradicts that. Its a little JJ Abrams creation called Lost, which I think is pretty darn original. When Lost first came out, people wanted to say it owed something to shows like "The Prisoner" and "X-Files." I didn't see the X-files comparison, still don't, and I never heard of the Prisoner, but I watched it and I just didn't see it. Of course, n my mind there is a big difference between being influenced by a predecessor, and being derivative of it, the latter being negative.

Now, I saw this episode before the Pilot, thanks to Tivo, and I have to say, I didn't like this episode. It was so dissapointing that I felt an urgency to go back and watch the pilot right away. And I like the pilot well enough, derivative though it was. So this second episode represents a significant drop-off in my mind.

There are too many "similarities" as have been pointed out. Cigarette Smoking Man = Nina Sharp, Mulder = Dunham, Scully = Bishop, Broyles = Skinner, Massive Dynamic = Government Conspiracy. Mark my words, there is definitely a Deep Throat character come to move along the narrative. Just watch.

And the whole Massive Dynamic storyline, where the lesser scientist steals the ideas of the brilliant but eccentric Scientist, and uses them to start a huge conglomerate with which he rules the world. Now where have I heard that storyline before.....Microsoft?

I love this show and can hardly wait until next Tuesday. I like all the visual aids ie, big, block letters of the locations. Yes you have to pay attention to what's going on but I usually go to the recaps to help me out. To tell you the truth I don't really see any similarity to Lost or XFiles for that matter. I didn't know who those three guys were at the end. Hope we find out next week.

Jeez....so many haters...What's wrong with you folks? Have you know patience? Everyone is complaining about originality but I'm sure none of you of a great show concept so why not try to enjoy it. All through history thoughts and concepts are resused and reimagined. Nothing anymore is completely "original." And for those that say its too much like Lost, so what? I love Lost. Love everything about. How cool would it be if they somehow tied the shows together in a vague way? (probably a long shot but I like the idea).
The bottom line is that we are only 2 episodes in and you all want all the answers and perfection immediately. I guess its the way society is today. Its a shame. So get over yourselves and just try to enjoy it and give it a fair chance...

I'm finding the show lacking a bit as well. I am a big-time Lost fan and was into the X-files as well. The fact that was brought up before about so much going on in each ep is the main prob in my opinion. The writers seem to want to stuff character origins, mythology and and a weekly story plot into each episode and it feels like a bit much. I'm sure there is pressure to get the ball rolling so to speak from the network, but it feels rushed.

The characters and their interactions are the best part of the episodes so far and I'd like to see them slow down a bit and give us time to care about them before getting into the "deep end" of the mythology.

I'm going to give it a chance and see if they get to a point where the episodes are a little more digestable. It's probably going against every fiber of a network execs instincts, but it needs to slow down and build up the character relationships. Make us care enough to tune in every week and I'll swallow whatever science they want to throw at me.

Sorry didn't read comments. but I thought the slabs were in the other doctor's lab, considering he got away he is probably working on making more sons.

And as for Peter's medical history, I'm stabbing in the dark here with my own idea's but maybe he had some brain trauma as a kid, and the good doctor gave a piece of his to save his son. (they do make a point to point out over and over Walter's memory problems, which could be a result of the treatments at the psych hospital, but they could also be a result of something else)...

I'm really enjoying the show, but I was a big fan of Alias & currently Lost. I've only seen a handful of X-File eps, but I've enjoyed this much more. To each his own, I guess. But if people aren't enjoying it, cut you losses and do something else. Life's too short. I started watching Pushing Daises last season because of all the hype & I really wanted to like it, but it was just not for me, so I quit and don't regret it. I'd still rather watch it though, than say Dancing with the Stars or Deal or no Deal.

Hmm... Who else milks the cow? They need it once or twice a day.

Hand in a jar? Nice nod to "Doctor Who" and "Torchwood."

I honestly think too many people who read this blog just like to nitpick the hell out of shows until they're no fun anymore.

well I am glad I don't have the hang ups that most have with this show, having never watched the X-files or Lost.

Yup sometimes the show doesn't move too swiftly, but I am still willing to give it another try.

I'm quite intrigued, wanting to know more about why Dr. Webster was put in the mental home....did he deserve to be there, or was it some kind of conspiracy to get rid of him....

Hasn't anyone else noticed that all these cases they have done so far, have mirrored research from Dr. Webster's past. Oh yes me and my former partner...or he remembers doing research on it or whatever..

And remembering where he parked his car after 17 years, that was hilarious! And then him saying that he had more cars and stuff hidden. Can't wait to see what transpires there...

This show follows a simple recipe.

1 cup X-files
1 cup CSI
1/2 cup Lost
1/4 cup teaspoons of 9/11 homeland security paranoia
1 teaspoon evil corporation
and just a tiny twist of Shyamalanahaaan

Simmer on high until plot boils over. Drain original plot and rinse thoroughly. Replace contents with a random packaged frozen dinner out of the fridge.
Add more cowbell to taste.

More cowbell, yes. That would fix it.
