Russell T. Davies in The Times

by Brad Trechak, posted Sep 17th 2008 11:06AM
Doctor WhoThe Times of the UK has a couple of articles about departing Doctor Who showrunner Russell T. Davies. The first is about his upcoming book, in which he writes about the trials and tribulations of returning the Time Lord to television. The second is about some tidbits from his run and his choice for the eleventh Doctor.

Of course, since Davies is departing he probably has little say in who will play the eleventh Who. Having never seen Wonder Boys, I couldn't tell you if Russell Tovey would be a good choice for the eleventh Doctor. I feel it's time to shake up the formula and have a woman play the role. But that's just me.

Why did Davies even try to get J.K. Rowling to write for the show? She must be way out of his budget. If she wrote for television, she'd probably want to create something that she would own. Having her appear as a character seems feasable since she's already done so for The Simpsons.

Both articles are pretty interesting. If you're a fan, check them out.

Why doesn't RTD just change "Doctor Who" into gay porn and get it over with?

You have to remember that Doctor Who is a staple of children's television in the UK. You don't want to go and do something like suddenly change the gender of the Doctor.

Females are empowered though their role as the Doctor's companion.

You've got to be kidding me. Rose, Martha, and Donna were all primairly responsible for saving the universe in each of their respective seasons.

After her adventures with the Doctor, Martha stepped it up and became one of the commanding officers of UNIT.

Yeah, Tovey's just too young for the role. My choice for the next doctor would be either Sean Pertwee (yes, the son of Doctor Nr. 3) or Tony Curran (LXG, The Midnight Meat Train, Underworld Evolution).

If the doctor was to suddenly change genders, you'd have a full scale revolt of Dr. Who fans.

Russell Tovey is still a little young for the role, but he's a great actor. And if he's smart, he'll stick around to recreate his role in "Being Human" when that goes to series, if it isn't already shooting.

If you haven't seen that pilot (BBC3 dramedy about a vampire, a werewolf and a ghost who wind up sharing a flat -- much much better than that description suggests), it's well worth watching. Imagine a CW sci-fi/fantasy drama, but smarter, more adult and a bit subtler with the pop culture stuff.

Russel Tovey was in The History Boys, not Wonder Boys. And is totally wrong for the role.
