The evolution of TV Squad

by Joel Keller, posted Oct 1st 2008 10:01AM
TV Squad logoAs several of you have noticed, we had a decrease in the number of posts recently at TV Squad, and we apologize for any concern or confusion that resulted. Part of that slowdown stemmed from some behind-the-scenes issues, which have now been resolved. And part of it came about because Keith and I wanted to take some time to talk about the direction of the blog with our writers and with our hosts at AOL.

During those discussions, we thought about what people like the most about us: the comprehensive episode reviews and the funny, thoughtful commentary about the shows we love. Over time, the site has become very heavy on the former and light on the latter, and we decided that we need to get things back in balance.

So, starting today, the evolution of TV Squad starts in earnest. Don't worry; it'll largely be the same as the site that you've enjoyed for the last three-and-a-half years, but the content will be a little tighter and a little more opinionated than it has been in the past.

The first change is that, as you may have already noticed, we will be doing a more limited set of episode reviews week in and week out. But that doesn't mean that we won't comment on shows we're not reviewing. On the contrary; this should free up our writers to comment on any show they want, not just the ones they've reviewed past. If someone wants to mention something about Smallville, for instance, they can.

We won't leave fans of shows stranded, though; in the near future, we will have a place for fans to discuss episodes of their favorite shows, whether we review them or not. Any blog lives and dies with its commenters, and we want to make sure that they continue the conversation for as long as they feel like it.

Another change you'll see over the next few months is that we will publish features that go more in-depth than they have in the past. Sure, the lists and other light features will stick around; they're fun and give readers a source of debate. But feature packages such as our recent history of reality TV have been well-received and very satisfying for our bloggers to do; you'll see more of those going forward.

What else will you see? Hard to say. We're going to try some things out and see what works and what doesn't. Like I said, this is an evolution, not a wholesale change. What we hope is that you folks stay with us while we make TV Squad a more dynamic and fun reading experience.

OK, I'm ready for the onslaught (heh). Any comments, complaints, and wonderations should be posted below. I'll answer your questions as best as I can over the next few days.

Okay, I'm late to this post...but better late than never, I guess. Over the last month, I have crabbed out in comments and emails about the absence of Supernatural reviews here. I got no responses, of course, but I guess this finally clears things up.

TV Squad was a great site once. Actually, it was great until quite recently, but you've literally stopped reviewing all of the shows I have any interest in. It's too cliché to accuse you guys of selling out, you're not a band or artists or anything even remotely meaningful, for Chrissakes...but for a good year of my life, you were kind of entertaining.

It's like you're giving the big middle finger to, yes, your "faithful" readers.

Rest in Peace, TV Squad. Nice knowing you.

I mainly came here for the episode reviews. Since you aren't reviewing most of the shows I watch anymore I probably won't visit the site much. I enjoyed it at one time though so thanks.

Please keep Jackie Schnoop's postings on the 'classic' reality shows. Watching Survivor, Big Brother and The Amazing Race wouldn't be the same without her.

Like many others, the thing I liked most about TVS were the episode reviews. I'll still be around, for a while, anyway, but more to see what this evolution becomes.

If The Powers That Be want to concentrate on views and traffic, I hope someone will point out this post has probably as much traffic as the rest of the site combined since it's been posted. For me, and apparently some others, there's less and less to click on around here.

Since most of you are now over at CliqueClack as well (which is why I'm guessing mentioning that site is OK), is that place going to be what TVS was, with TVS providing additional inroads into the world of TV?

Time will tell, I suppose. Good luck with your evolution.

o/` Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
'Til it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot o/`

I'm going to have to echo a lot of other people. I come here for the episode reviews, to see if it's worth watching every week. With my class schedule, something always has to go and every single day I clicked on the site, it was full of Big Brother posts, which made me want to scream. I liked the TDS reviews, though I can understand how it would be somewhat time consuming and I never would have watched Mad Men if not for this site. It's just a shame that the things I loved most about this site are going away.

I've been following TVSquad for quite some time, and am happy with all work that has gone into it. You have generally done a great job, and deserves to hear it.

I guess I sort of echo some other commenters, but the episode reviews was a big part of what drew me to this site, and made me come back. I would imagine that most people that read the reviews has already seen the episodes in question, and is just interested in seeing the comments about the episode. So how about keeping te full review for the popular shows, and post some mini-reviews/commentaries of 2-3 paragraphs for less popular shows. That way we would still have a place to read your opinion (and I love that you all are vocal about your opinions, it makes the site more personal) and we, the readers, still have a place to comment the show.

I've been sick and tired of TVSquad dropping my favorite shows since last year. Over and over I'd have to read a whiny "why I won't be reviewing X anymore" post (Numb3rs? Monk? Criminal Minds?) and then my favorite show would disappear from the site, except for stupid gossip about which former member of the Star Trek cast might appear in the show.

So I eagerly clicked on this post because "evolution" was exactly what TVS needed. But you're evolving the wrong way. Devolving.

I read TVS for two things: To find out about cool new shows, and to join a community to talk about my favorite shows after I watched them.

Unfortunately, it's now useless for both, although it's great for finding out what the cast of Private Practice thinks about bushy eyebrows or embarrassing details of Ed MacMahon's personal life. And reality TV, my God, the reality TV.

Also, I run a bunch of websites, some far more popular than this one, and I find it hilarious that you would use "traffic" as a metric for whether to review shows. Do you know where the traffic comes from? Do you know why TVS doesn't get any "Criminal Minds" traffic? If you don't write about a show, you don't get linked, and you don't get in the search engines, and you don't get the traffic.

Choosing based on a show's ratings would make far more sense. Then you'd at least have reviews for the most watched shows on TV (CSI, Law & Order, etc) and I have a sneaking suspicion you'd get some traffic there.

Anyway, good luck with your evolution. Please post at ClicqueClack or TWOP and let us know when you've evolved into something worth reading.

Agreed. Most of what is being dropped is most of what I liked here.

Leave it to AOL to screw up anything they're associated with.

Time to spend more time at http://www.cliqueclack.com/tv/

More episodes reviews, or at least keep reviewing the shows you always have in the past.

I agree with pretty much all the comments in that I'm saddened that this has happened to my favorite TV site. I understand WHY you guys have to switch up the formats, but it doesn't make it any easier to swallow. Still, I can go about things as I normally do - I'll just head right to CliqueClack after watching my shows for your insights on them, instead of coming here. I'll still take a look here, but most of what I want will be over there, so, you know. Good luck with your new approach, and GOD do I hope this reality craze dies a quick, ugly death. Maybe then we don't have to give up our content regarding REAL television.
