Gossip Girl girls won't be on 30 Rock after all

Gossip GirlFor some reason, this news pleases me.

Not because I have some hatred toward Gossip Girl. As a matter of fact, the few times I've watched it I've found it rather clever and engrossing. No, the reason why I'm glad that Blake Lively and Leighton Meester won't appear on 30 Rock is because I'm really afraid the show is going to turn into another casting stunt-filled sitcom, which will get tiresome after a while. Official word from the show is that Lively and Meester won't be on the show for logistical reasons.

I think it's one thing to have a celeb make an appearance on the show because they are icons (Carrie Fisher, Tim Conway, the rumored Oprah guest spot) or have a direct connection to NBC (Jerry Seinfeld, David Schwimmer) or they're someone with a comic sensibility that mirrors the show's (Steve Martin). But I think having cast members from Gossip Girl just smelled of a ratings ploy. I don't think 30 Rock needs to prove they are hip by having them on, they're already hip as it is, for their own reasons (despite the fact that they don't get super ratings). Hey, with her buzz right now, I think Gossip Girl should be trying to get Tina Fey on their show.

I'm actually disappointed that the Gossip Girl's aren't going to be on. I thought the story they were going to use was awesome. 30 Rock does an amazing job with their guest stars. They fit right in with the flow of the show. And like Prateek said, if it helps the ratings and draws new viewers in, why not?

30 Rock has had an eclectic group of guest stars and they've managed to use them in a variety of well written situations without coming off as gimmicky. The show hasn't been doing awesome in the reasons, and they've gotten a bunch of critical acclaim. I was a little hesitant that NBC might pull the plug. Arrested Development was the same way, critical acclaim, but still cancelled. Either way, I want the show to be on for as long as it can and if we need to add one flash in the pan folks to help increase ratings then so be it. Tina has even joked she wanted Britney Spears to show up as a way to boost ratings for 30 rock the way it helped How I met your mother. Honestly, if Britney can follow the direction and commit to whatever is written I wouldn't mind seeing it.
