Webster didn't really float in the air with the help of balloons

Sometimes it's really dangerous to try to recreate something you've seen on television. Can you imagine trying to fly like Nathan on Heroes or trying to be an overweight guy who marries a really hot woman like on all of the sitcoms? Dangerous! We've already seen a bunch of kids injured by trying to copy stunts on Jackass and Punk'd.

But some recreations aren't that dangerous, especially if you do them inside. Mena Trott over at the Dollar Short blog decided to see if she could attach balloons to her young daughter and have her float in the air, a la Webster in the opening credits of the 80s ABC sitcom. The result? Well, turns out you can't put a bunch of balloons on a child or a small person (or a dog) and make them float in the air.

I'm sure if you had enough balloons, say 3000, you could float, but where the hell are you going to get that many balloons?

I'm not sure if I'm a little bummed that it didn't work or if I'm actually relieved that there isn't a kid up there with the birds and airplanes. Probably a little of both. Now, has anyone ever tried to actually make one of Rachael Ray's meals in 30 minutes?

I have one of Ray's cookbook's. It took me over an hour to make a stupid 30-minute casserole of hers. I'm no slouch in the kitchen, either. So, BUSTED.

I was just coming here to say the same thing - do the research and check out Mythbusters. :)

That show really *has* taken off, hasn't it?

You need to check out "Mythbusters". They did it in their first season with Adam and a lawnchair and weather balloons, and later on with a little girl and regular party balloons. Lots of them.

Alex was thinking the same thing I was. I remember watching that episode but I couldnt remember how many balloons they ended up using, but according to the myth summary here:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MythBusters_(season_2)#Carried_Away

They used around 3500 to get the 4 year old off the ground.

I think Mythbusters got a kid to float with around 3,500 balloons. So I would go to Adam and Jamie to do it :D

hmmm... Webster and confirmation that balloons can't pick up a small child (duuh)... Real relevant.
