What to Watch Thursday, Oct. 9

by Kim Potts, posted Oct 9th 2008 5:00AM
Life on Mars'Life on Mars'
(10PM, ABC) series premiere
Imagine life before cell phones, the Internet and 'CSI'-type forensics ... that's where detective Sam Tyler finds himself after he's hit by a car in modern-day New York City.

Tyler awakens in 1973 NYC, with a different boss (Harvey Keitel), new cop cohorts (including 'The Sopranos' Michael Imperioli) and no idea why he's ended up back in time, though there are striking similarities between the bad guy he was pursuing in 2008 and the one he's investigating in 1973.

Is Sam actually in a coma? Is he dead, and 1973 is his afterlife? All questions that will be answered, assuming network execs let him live long enough to make it back to the future.

'Kath & Kim'
(8:30PM, NBC) series premiere
In this U.S. adaptation of an award-winning Australian sitcom, Kath (Molly Shannon) is a 40-something single mom who's ready to jump start her own love life when demanding daughter Kim (Selma Blair) gets married and moves out ... until Kim dumps her new hubby and moves back in with Kath.

'Eleventh Hour'
(10PM, CBS) series premiere
And another adaptation: Rufus Sewell takes over for Patrick Stewart in this American take on a British miniseries about Dr. Jacob Hood, a biophysicist who investigates science-related crimes for the FBI. Up first: Hood suspects someone's trying to clone humans.

'CSI'
(9PM, CBS) 9th season premiere
Warrick's out; Sara's, temporarily, back in.

saturday night live'Saturday Night Live Thursday Weekend Update'
(9:31PM, NBC) series premiere
Wow, because the title 'SNL Thursdays' would have been too pithy? Whatever ... the long-running sketch show has been on the money with its political skits this year, so this election-season special series of Thursday night eps is must-see-TV.

'Testees'
(10:30PM, FX) series premiere
AKA 'It's Always Sunny' at Testico. This perfect, raunchy companion to 'Philadelphia' follows two thirtysomething guys who work as guinea pigs, or Testers, at the Testico corporation.

'L.A. Ink'

(10PM, TLC) 3rd season premiere
The fact that rocker Dave Navarro's getting a tattoo of a pin-up girl to memorialize his mom might seem kinda creepy until you find out that his mom, a former model, was murdered when he was a teen. OK, still kinda creepy, but kinda oddly sweet, too.

'Tabatha's Salon Takeover'
(10PM, Bravo) 1st season finale
Candolyn, of Candolyn's Salon in Los Angeles, has a sassy staff she can't control and a roster of clients she can't keep from fleeing, which means Tabatha has her hands full in saving this biz.

What's on tomorrow: 'Starter Wife,' 'Degrassi' premieres and more
