CW's Sunday shows to go on hiatus

by Brad Trechak, posted Oct 14th 2008 10:23AM
The CWTwo new shows on The CW have experienced such a drop in ratings that two of the series, Easy Money and Valentine, have been shut down on a 4 to 6 week hiatus while the creators work on scripts. Fortunately for The CW these shows are on their "rented out" space on Sundays. This is unfortunate for MRC, the company that actually runs those shows.

Is this a delay of the inevitable? Is the CW hemorrhaging viewers and is it doomed to fail? What was the point of that whole merger between UPN and the WB anyway (if you still want to watch The WB, it's online)?

Easy Money and Valentine, Inc. still have 13 episode orders and will likely be back. One can only hope that when they come back that they still have a network to broadcast the shows on. If not, there is always cable. Does anyone even watch these shows?

Easy Money - I'm over 50 and my son is 30. We both like the show. We've become an avid fans. Great group of characters with a number of story lines to explore. But putting it on Sunday is a loser - to many other competing show. Plus as nancyofthepants says - CW is were all the "cheesy teen romance dramedies" run. Easy Money doesn't fit and will have trouble finding a audience at CW.

EM is the only show on CW I would even think of watching. Put it on a different network, give it some advertising and time and I'm sure it could build a fan base.

I have seen both, and I love Easy Money. I could live without Valentine (though, it's possible some work on the scripts could change my mind).

Easy Money, however, has an interesting story and a great cast. The family dynamic reminds me of Arrested Development in the "lots of love/more lies" kind of way, and I hope people can relate to this better. Or at least now that the world has seen AD, they can finally relate.

They screwed up by not bringing Jericho and Moonlight over. That would have been 12-15 million viewers right there. And they wouldn't have even needed any promotion with their fanbases. They would've only had to post 1 message on 2 sites. But those 2 shows don't fit in with their target demos : 12-25 year olds with the attention span of a fruit fly.

I can't speak for Easy Money, but I have been tuning in to Valentine the past two weeks and have really enjoyed it. I have loved Autumn Reeser, Kristoffer Polaha, and Christine Lakin in past shows (yeah I liked Step by Step). I am a little sad, I hope this comes back.

I doubt that the success or failure of the Sunday night lineup will make much difference as to whether the CW continues or not. If it were crucial to the network's survival, they wouldn't be experimenting with turning it over to an independent contractor to begin with.

Far more telling will be whether 90210 can maintain its momentum in certain demographic groups through the entire season, and whether shows like Gossip Girl and Supernatural can increase their audiences over last year.

I watch Valentine. It's pretty good. But i've only seen two episodes...it seems networks aren't very patient. I could see potential, but now I guess I'll never know.
