Star Trek is on EW.com

by Brad Trechak, posted Oct 16th 2008 10:52AM
Entertainment WeeklySome images are up at EW.com for the new Star Trek movie starring Chris Pine as Kirk and Zachary Quinto as Spock. There are also some interviews in the along with an article pushing the revamp of the franchise.

It was a mistake pushing the release of the movie from Christmas Day 2008 to May 2009. This sort of movie would do much better in a December release. Now Star Trek will simply be another movie among all the other summer tentpoles.

In the article, J.J. Abrams describes himself more of a Star Wars fan than a Star Trek fan and that may be reflected in the movie. I'm ambivalent about that idea. On one hand, Star Trek always seemed more a thinking person's franchise whereas Star Wars was always about fights, chases and space explosions. On the other hand, fights, chases and explosions seem to be more popular in sci-fi movies than cogitative fiction.

Star Trek: Enterprise didn't work so well as a prequel. Let's see if this movie does better.

No; the movie (purportedly) revolves around the characters meeting for the first time, in the Academy.

Hm. Interesting. I've always been able to see Zachary Quinto as Spock...until I saw that cover and every picture in the linked to story. Awful.

Chris Pine, on the other hand, I've NEVER seen as Kirk until that cover shot. But it was back to not at all in the other photos. And damnit, I'm not supposed to think Simon Pegg can pull of Scotty, but I no longer hate the idea as much as I did.

Why do I have the song "I Don't Want to Wait" going through my head?

Zachary Quinto looks pretty good as Spock. Chris Pine as kirk not so much.
There's only one Kirk. William Shatner rocks!

Here is what they should make: Star Trek:KIRK's Heroes.

On a big old prison ship. Cruising the Galaxy with a huge cast of grifters, born losers, murderers led by Sargent James T. Kirk, destined to spend eternity orbiting the Milky Way. Add in a dimwitted commandant with an overstuffed first mate constantly trying to out guess Sargent Kirk and his band merry men and you might be able to re-energize the franchise! Otherwise they should just let it go.

Okay, I don't know about anybody else (I haven't read throught the other comments yet) but just from the way they look on that cover I'm not going to be rushing to theater to see this one. They look gawd awful.

I know you shouldn't "judge a book by its cover" but something about this just screams bad writing, acting, directing, and hair and make-up.

And btw, I grew up with the original in sydication. I'm a fan. I have no problem with retro. This just some how looks wrong.

Go look at the amount of films that will be out from late November to the end of December. Paramount and WB were smart to move their movies to the less populated summer months. It will make more money as there will be more theatres available and less competition.

You know, I have heard SO much about this new ST movie, for SO long from SO many people....Abrams, vaious actors, etc. SO many websites... you can count on TrekToday and TrekWeb having a couple of pieces every day about how "this reboot brings new life to the ST universe" or how "Abrams stayed true to the ST canon".

You know what? I'm sick of it. I'm no longer interested. They have burned out and used up whatever enthusiasm I had in over a year of endless talktalktalk about it. I don't care if Kirk is in it, or how Quinto is so grateful for the Spock role. Did you hear me? I DON'T CARE ANYMORE!

This was no way to market a film and build buzz about it. I hit my limit about four months ago. If I see it in the bargain bin a few years from now I may pick it up, but for now, sorry, pass.

I still think Enterprise was massively underrated.
It went on for a few years & was just getting to fit the big shoes it had to fill when it was cancelled.

& it was infinitely better than Voyager.
