Life On Mars: The Real Adventures of the Unreal Sam Tyler

(S01E02) I said it before and I'll say it again: Life On Mars has a fantastic soundtrack. They also continue their use of yellow filter to simulate the dirtiness of New York City in the 1970's. When they go to scenes from 2008, the filter becomes blue. I wonder if the creators intended a deeper significance with that?
Many of the scenes from tonight's episode where taken from the original BBC version, so there is opportunity to further compare the remake to the original. While I like Jason O'Mara's version of Sam Tyler and feel he's comparable to John Simm, there is no way Harvey Keitel can match Phil Glenister as Gene Hunt. He can't even deliver the line "you are surrounded by armed bastards" with anywhere near the ferocity.
Much of the action of the original version involved foot chases and it looks like they're continuing the tradition. However, there is no way that Harvey Keitel can do a foot chase through Central Park at his age. Don't get me wrong. I think Harvey Keitel is a great actor. He's just not appropriate for the role. Another thing: in the original, Sam Tyler is a short, skinny guy and seemed overshadowed by the beefy Hunt. In the American version, Sam Tyler is more muscular and Hunt seems small by comparison. Yet Hunt matches him punch for punch. WTF?
Michael Imperioli, however, wins for best dialogue of the series. I recall reading that Life On Mars wasn't so much a man going back through time to a 1970's police force as going back through time to a 1970's cop show. That's how this series strikes me. I think cops behaving that way would be reprimanded, even in the 1970's.
If you blinked, you may have missed Lisa Bonet's appearance in the episode. I was wondering when they would roll out the hippie chick stereotype. Glad they got it over with. It must be easy for the crew to find the outfits for the era. There are still people throughout New York who dress the same way. They're called hipsters.
I did like the list Sam made attempting to explain how he got to 1973 New York. It goes through possibilities not even examined in the original.
