The Sarah Connor Chronicles: The Tower is Tall But the Fall is Short

by Brad Trechak, posted Oct 20th 2008 10:02PM
The Sarah Connor Chronicles(S02E06) Much of Catherine Weaver's backstory was told in this episode. We have learned that the T-1001 (presumably) killed and replaced the original Catherine Weaver and her husband. Although for some reason we have yet to learn she left the daughter Savannah alive.

On the other hand, we still don't know the T-1001's motivations. She has no problem committing murder, as seen in her first appearance. The T-1001 nearly encountered John tonight, so we're still in the dark as to whether her mission is to terminate him (as with all the other Terminators) or something else entirely. If she encounters John and doesn't try to kill him, then she may be part of that cyborg contingent that has some other objective that was seen in the first season.

When the T-1001 acted particularly robotic at the beginning of the episode, I thought it was poor writing and a horrible inconsistency with her previous behavior, then it was explained that she was learning human behavior by watching old home movies of the original Catherine Weaver. That explains a great deal as to why the T-1001 can emulate certain behaviors, but others such as child-care elude her.

Which brings me to another interesting theory: why was a Terminator (or Terminatrix, depending on if they are named according to gender) sent back to presumably kill Boyd Sherman when he is helping Catherine Weaver develop an artificial intelligence that presumably leads to Skynet?

The first possibility is that the Terminator wasn't sent back to kill him but fulfill some other function that may have included protecting him.. The second possibility is far more interesting...

I think the Terminators in the future have started to break into factions. There are the "originals", which are trying to kill John Connor (they tend to act more simplistic), and the "others" which are following a new program whose objectives haven't yet been fully revealed (and these tend to act more sophisticated). Mind you, none of this explains how Skynet is "learning" in the future to make Terminators more sophisticated (such as giving them a self-destruct chip). To me, this begs the question that since all this is history to Skynet, why didn't the Terminators have a self-destruct chip in the first place? Ah, the headaches of time travel.

Not only did the T-1001 not kill Savannah Weaver, she is even acting maternal towards her. Even worse, young Savannah is scared in the beginning of the episode of her mother (and rightfully so), then with a little robotic affection starts acting like she's safe. It's a somewhat implausible change (and I say this about a show involving time-traveling robots).

I'm glad they're finally dealing with the fact that the Connor family needs therapy (just from the first season beating alone). Under the same circumstances, who wouldn't?

When Jesse first gave the idea that she went AWOL from the future, I thought to myself "it's amazing that more future soldiers don't do that". After all, where else is there to run? And how will the future authorities go after them? Then the audience was subtly informed that she was there for a mission regarding Derek and the Connors and my theory was blown to bits.

That was a hilarious elevator fight scene. They hired a contortionist to play the red-headed Terminator and both the interruption by the family with the little boy and Cameron wrapping her up like a pretzel had me in stitches.

A lot happened in this episode that was riveting. The further development of Catherine Weaver, the fight scene, the psychoanalysis of the Connors, the mystery of Jesse and the investigations of Ellison made me want to tune in to the next episode. This series is really starting to find itself. If this quality continues, it could succeed Battlestar Galactica as the best sci-fi currently on television.

Why did Skynet send back the red-headed female Terminator?
To kill Boyd Sherman126 (36.8%)
To protect Boyd Sherman142 (41.5%)
To make pretzels59 (17.3%)
To have someone to play chess with15 (4.4%)

I'm guessing the Battlestar reference is to the original series.

The new BSG is one of the best shows ever. T:SCC is closer to Bionic Woman (either version) than new BSG.

And yet I keep watching hoping for it to get better. At least it goes well with the similar quality Prison Break.

As with Heroes, why do the "heroes" do STUPID things? Does anyone believe this John Conner will have have the brains to survive to the future?

At least he is smarter than Peter in Heroes. Without a doubt, the dumbest hero in any time, and I still like Heroes a lot

Where's Dollhouse when you need it??

I think Weaver is working for skynet trying to make it smarter. Sherman helps her with this (unwittingly) which is why skynet sent a bot to protect him. The apparent first result of this effort is the self destructing chip. But as with the original terminator movie we see that John Connors existence goes hand in hand with that of skynet. If skynet had not sent back a terminator to kill Sarah, John would not have been born. If skynet had not employed Sherman, John would not have received the counseling, which possibly stopped him from killing himself.

Great episode, the redhead is the creppiest terminator ever... to me anyway... :)

I really loved this episode. As Reviewer pointed out, a lot of interesting things happened. My theory was that T-contortionist was sent to pow-wow John since Jesse seems to have tracked them down and might be working with the bad robots, but I think I like your theories much better because there are certain mysterious elements to why our red headed robot was there. The fight scene kicked ass! It didn't really make sense for Redhead to stop fighting, but it was more wickedly funny that way, and made her a mirror of Cameron. I loved this episode (especially the paired psychoanalysis of the Catherine Weaver/T1001 empire v the dysfunctional Connor family). Fox, please don't cancel this show. I am riveted!

"I think the Terminators in the future have started to break into factions."

Wasn't this hinted at in the episode featuring some of Real Cameron's back story? Future Terminator Cameron Clone monologued something about an us/them separation amongst terminators during an interrogation scene.

As to why Skynet would send back an assassin to take out Boyd Sherman, it seemed clear to me that they were hinting that without the therapy he provides to John and/or Sarah, one or both of them cracks under the pressure. The fact that Sherman was also treating Catherine's daughter seemed like one of those unintentional twists of fate, although with these time travel plots the whole definition of fate gets twisted. For instance if the resistance fighter had never been sent back to protect Sherman from being assassinated then the Connors would never have sought him out and stumbled into treatment the way they did.

I continue to believe this show has made the biggest improvement from season 1 to season 2. And, I couldn't be happier that they gave it a full season. I really feel like it will help push the new movie next year. I hope the movie is able to make some connections with the concepts the show is bringing forward.

Robots nearly wipe out the human race, a constant battle between the two sides ensues, and now members of each side are interested in establishing some sort of alliance. Maybe Cameron will eventually give birth to John's child, the first of God's new generation. Then Ellison will begin to see and hear a version of Weaver that exists only in his head after he helps the terminators to bring about Judgment Day. Ugh. Friedman needs to start coming up with some original ideas instead of just giving us the poor man's Battlestar Galactica.

Um... you *do* realize that scotty and Brad Trechak are just spitballing as fans, don't you? That none of this machine faction theorizing has actually appeared on the show yet? And that the Christian imagery in Terminator long predated BSG 2.0?

My theory: In the future, there's a growing faction of Terminators that are rebelling against Skynet. They cut a deal with adult Connor and his resistance: These Terminators will help take down Skynet, so long as the humans help to free all Terminators from the control of Skynet. Thus, all the Terminators (including those not siding against Skynet) will be given free will.

Wahoo! Fox did the right thing and ordered a full season! That's great news for one of the best shows on TV. If you don't like this show, then I already know I don't want to watch what your watching instead (I'm guessing Knight Rider or some other lame offering). I haven't seen this week's yet, but now I can sit down with my Tivo and know that my committment is being rewarded. They say that even thought the ratings are low, the advertisers still like it. Hell, if it will keep it on the air, I won't fast forward through the commercials, and I might even think about buying from the advertisers. (Do you hear me, advertisers?) Call it a reverse-boycott. Good job Fox! Good job advertisers! You stuck with a winner, and I hope for all our sakes people start catching on what a great show this is.
