Alec Baldwin to co-host TCM's The Essentials

by Allison Waldman, posted Oct 22nd 2008 3:01PM
AB 30 RockAlec Baldwin is a very complicated, very smart, and very talented guy. In two interviews just a month or so apart this fall, he was complaining about his career, contemplating other things he wanted to do with his life ... and that was all before winning the Emmy for 30 Rock.

Whatever he envisions for a professional life away from acting, if that's to be the case, Alec Baldwin has signed on to co-host Turner Classic Movies' The Essentials, a weekly analysis of a classic movie with co-host Robert Osborne. The show, which airs every Saturday at 8 p.m., most recently featured actress Rose McGowan, and before her Carrie Fisher and Molly Haskell shared the duties with Osborne.

It's one of my favorite TCM programs, giving the hosts a chance to set up a great movie, offer commentary and stimulate conversation. Considering the fact that Alec is very opinionated and pretty funny, he should add a lot to The Essentials.

TCM's new season, which will be it's ninth, premieres in March 2009, so there shouldn't be any significant conflict with his 30 Rock schedule. It'll be interesting to see which films Baldwin chooses to review in The Essentials.

A few years back, my husband had a chance to meet Alec in a movie memorabilia store. Alec was looking for a photo of Tony Curtis. Hmm... since I'm pretty sure that The Essentials has shown Some Like It Hot in the past, perhaps a few other Tony gems might get the "essentials" treatment -- Spartacus? The Sweet Smell of Success? The Defiant Ones? I wouldn't complain if one of my guilty pleasures -- The Great Race -- was selected.

I love to listen to Baldwin talk about movies so I love this fit. Never could figure out why they tapped Rose McGowan as a cohost. BTW, why should The Great Race be a guilty pleasure, I'm also a huge fan of that flick and recommend it all the time.

I enjoy watching 30 Rock and the movies that he has been in. Great actor. As a person he probably needs a heart transplant.

Why would it conflict with his schedule, regardless? It can't possibly take more than a day to shoot an episode of The Essentials.

I look forward to watching Alec co-host one of my favorite programs on TCM. He's a big fan of the channel and this is not his first time being involved with TCM. He was a Guest Programmer last year and choose the following movies as his favorites:

The Bad & The Beautiful
It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World
Birdman of Alcatraz
Sorry, Wrong Number

He also was asked to host a tribute to Gene Wilder (http://www.tcm.com/thismonth/article/?cid=193992) and narrated the documentary "Public Enemies: The Golden Age of the Gansgter Film" which aired last night (Which was pretty good, BTW).

Some Like Hot" has gotten the "Essentials" treatment a few times and "The Defiant Ones" was shown earlier this year.
