Election Night: CBS (Part 1)

by Bob Sassone, posted Nov 4th 2008 7:55PM
Katie CouricSome quick notes on the Katie Couric-anchored election coverage on The Tiffany Network:

7:26: They've gone to local coverage for a bit. Good time for my first gin and tonic of the evening. I'll be back later with more, and stay tuned for posts from CNN, MSNBC, and more.

7:18: Now Katie says "Can you hear me now? I sound like a Sprint commercial" to Obama spokesman. Can't she get any of her commercial icon references right tonight?!?

7:14:
First glitch of the night: can't hear what Obama spokesman is saying. Katie goes to McCain spokesman instead. CBS IN THE TANK FOR MCCAIN!

7:07: CBS's "Magic Board" (or whatever they're calling it) isn't as good as CNN's. It's the Sony Walkman to CNN's iPod.

7:05: Jeff Greenfield is firing off sports/weather cliches to describe the election. I already miss Dan Rather and his Ratherisms: "This race is tighter than a cranberry muffin at an auto show."

7:03:
Watching CBS in HD. Sides of screen barely legible. Win? Net? +1? Gah.

7:02: Tie update: Bob Schieffer's looks like Christmas candy, Jeff Greenfield's looks like it was made by one of his kids. Katie isn't wearing a tie.

7:00: Katie: "CBS projects John McCain as the winner ... of Kentucky." Thought we were going to have a 2000 flashback there.

6:54: Montage of the election from the beginning to now. Ah, memories: change you can Xerox, Romney, pitbulls, lipstick, Wall Street, Joe The Plumber, "that one," Tina Fey, etc.

6:46: Trying to figure out how I'm going to make my Election Night Dinner (TM) while still paying attention to the screen so I DON'T MISS one second of pundit observation or election result.

6:35: Katie Couric calls John McCain the Eveready Bunny. It's actually Energizer Bunny, Katie, but we get what you mean.

6:30pm: CBS calls the election for...just kidding!

Too funny, could she be missing the commercial references on purpose?

Ugh,
I still can't believe we're about to put a guy in the White House who was a State Senator 4 years ago.
