Gay group mad at The Simpsons

by Bob Sassone, posted Nov 5th 2008 3:02PM
Simpsons HalloweenYou know, E! Online should choose its headlines a little more carefully. Or maybe they did it on purpose, heh.

The Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network is ticked that The Simpsons annual "Treehouse of Horror" special had a line from Nelson Muntz that they consider a gay slur. Muntz said "that's so gay" towards Milhouse in a scene in the episode this past weekend. A spokesman for the group says that Muntz should visit thinkb4youspeak.com, a site that asks people not to use the word gay in a negative way. I guess that will be a Very Special Episode of The Simpsons.

The funny thing is this is not even the first time that the show has used the line "that's so gay." I think I remember it being used by one of Nelson's buddies when he was dating Lisa several seasons ago. I think the line was something like "You have a girlfriend? That's so gay!"

So, is this a slur or are people just overreacting at a joke, being too PC?

Things change. The word "gay" is shifting yet again as it did from it's original meaning to be happy or carefree until well into the connotation of sexual deviations. Things change and are ever in evolution. See the meaning of the word family. Is it two parents two children?? NO

@MrTickles: Actually, it's been speculated for a long time now that Lincoln was gay. See, for example: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=9f05e5d61439f93aa35752c0a9639c8b63.
(and I got a giggle that the URL begins with "query")
Actually, when I saw that bit in the Simpsons, I was rather impressed at their awareness of the debate about Lincoln's sexuality.

This is like people saying that's so ghetto and time something is second-hand, falling apart, or if a person is behaving inappropriate or loudly, regardless of if the person is from the ghetto or not. And everyone knows being from the ghetto is largely associated with being African-American or another ethnic minority. But we (I'm black) are not losing our s**t every time it's said, largely because half the things that are being deemed as "ghetto" have NOTHING to do with ghetto lifestyle.

"Ohmigosh Becky! You're wearing last season's dolce & gabanna's sunglass?!? That's SOOO ghetto!"

It's HILARIOUS when you think about it.

i saw the Halloween special too, and frankly im surprised that Nelson's comment is what set them off. i was sure it was going to be the end of the show, when the animated Lincoln put his hand on Homer's ass as they walked through the pearly gates. who knew?

being gay myself, i am not offended by that phrase, "that's so gay." im secure in my homosexuality to the point where i can joke about myself and my lifestyle. to those who cant take a joke, lighten up!

Dear Gay, Lesbian, and Straight Education Network,
Quit being such fags and sissies. Man up, and don't get your panties in a bunch.

Signed, a "Breeder".

(See, they have 'bad' words for us to, but I'm not offended by it.)

I wonder what the next catchphrase or word will be selected to describe someone as gay. Maybe we should start now and push the point home that being a jerk about a word doesn't make much sense. I'm thinking we should pre-empt the word a$$hole. What do you think?

Words like "gay" are desensitized over time to take on completely different meanings.

Do people rail against those who call someone "dumb"? I mean, it's a term originally meaning, "lacking the ability to speak". But the "mute cause" doesn't go around attacking people for using the term "dumb blonde" or "you're so dumb".

The majority of people don't think of the term "gay" as being derogatory anymore. Unlike "fag" and other such insults which clearly do carry a significant amount of anger behind their uses, "gay" (when referring to a homosexual) is rarely if ever used in any kind of derogatory way.
