Survivor: The Apple in the Garden of Eden

Susie is surviving on Survivor Gabon
(S17E08) "Susie's in the middle spinning around in circles playing dizzy bat." - Marcus

Well, my man Marcus just might have a point there about Susie on Survivor. I can usually figure out the castaways, but I'm having a bit of difficulty when it comes to the words which come out of her mouth. She already has Corinne freaking out about her due to telling her she was going to vote her out. Now, it's one thing to scheme and plan, but you don't tell the target about the scheming and planning! Susie could be just a hard working at camp but challenge lump and float along nicely. Nope, she has to talk. Read on past the jump for my review of tonight's show.

The apple quandary
Okay, I understand why no one wanted to appear to want the hidden idol even though they all obviously wanted it. Had someone gone for it, you just know they'd have to use it the first time up at Tribal Council. Even if Kenny had somehow managed to get the clue without Charlie horning in, it would have been noticed if he all of a sudden started digging in the sand for it. With all of the references to Eden and the apple, I keep thinking of James the gravedigger. He'd fit in right fine this season.

While Charlie snagging the clue from Kenny was a bit brazen, it also advanced his alliance with Randy and Marcus even more while showing the Fangsters that they're still not the cool kids in camp. For me it's a sad day when a bully like Randy not only thinks he's a cool kid in camp, but acts out the scenario to the max. Blech. My stomach still hurts revisiting his King of the Beach bit.

When is a merge not a merge?

This season is still messing with the Kota and Fang tribes. I expected the merge when they were told to bring their belongings to a feast. I know they did, too. But nope, it was yet another tribe reshuffling. Ten numbered stones in a bag and an odd/even split. The new Kota tribe consists of Bob, Marcus, Susie, Crystal, and Kenny. The new Fang tribe is Sugar, Charlie, Randy, Matty, and Corinne. Uh-oh. Charlie has split from his Gabon God Marcus.

They couldn't have set up the split any better to advantage the already leading original Kota group. Now they have three Kota members and two Fang on each tribe. Barring dizzy bat action, it's a shoo-in for the Kota Six to rule the rest of the game. But you know how those dizzy bats are, don't you?

Can you balance it on your nose next?
That was some Immunity Challenge. To balance those poles and the one across the top on the palms of their hands would have been tough enough. But using the backs of the hands had to be very uncomfortable. Plus, it barred the use of opposable thumbs. Woe is Crystal, once again showing poorly in a challenge. What's with that woman? Just the fact that she was an athlete should be giving for much better performances on these challenges. You'd think the discipline and training would account for some sort of concentration and determination.

When it was down to Matty and Bob, I was sure that Matty was going to lose it when he got all wacky and cocky trying to distract Bob. Bob's hands were shaking and he looked a lot less stable than Matty. But it would only take the slightest motion to lose it all. And Matty had too much to lose messing around. He knew he would most likely be voted out if the new Fang went to Tribal Council. However, he squeaked on by and it was a Kota showing at TC.

Kenny and Crystal work their mojo
They did it again. Even though Crystal was safe this week because trusting Marcus went ahead and trusted her due to finding out she's the cousin of his friend, they did it. Kenny was the target. Neither Kenny or Crystal would survive on their own skills in the game without each other. So Kenny cannot leave Crystal even though she promised Marcus she wouldn't write down his name. After all, she said the same thing to Ace.

The hitch was to convince the dizzy bat to flip to their side. Just as they set Sugar up for the blindside of Ace, they got Susie to come aboard their Fang Follies Train and vote against her ally Marcus. Yikes! Maybe Crystal and Kenny have something to them! If they can swing the vote each week, these two weak players may end up in the final four. Sigh ... I was hoping Marcus would last longer. He's the first member of the jury.

Should someone have gone for the Immunity Idol at the beach?

Shoot, even skinny little Yau-Man did better in challenges during his season than Crystal is doing. I think it's safe to say her Olympic background has not served her well. Plus, Yau was smarter than Crystal, his big mistake was trusting Dreamz (I could not stand tht guy!)

Someone should have gone for the idol. Sure it puts a target on your back, but if you merge that means there is individual immunity. So grab the idol, if you don't win the first individual immunity, you at least can use it and give yourself a chance at winning the second individual immunity. Plus with them still having teams, if Matty or Sugar would have reached out and grabbed it, they would have had two between them.

I always liked Marcus, but he made a huge blunder by thinking he was in control. He should have never tried to be friends with Crystal, he gave her the ammo to go to Suzie with. He should have made Suzie feel like she belonged, since they had the numbers he could have let her pick who went home, then she would have felt loyal to him. When they see Marcus gone the new Fong may want to make a final five deal with Matty and Sugar. They would still have the numbers to get to final 3.

I thought they did some kind of psychological testing on potential contestants? That Corinne bitch is frickin' crazy. She admits she is a vengeful person - that is an understatement! I hope the alliance crumbles only because she is in it. I cannot stand her. Evil, she is evil! Go Sugar!!

I wonder how Marcus realized he knows Crystal's cousin. They mentioned something about him asking her if she knows ??? Cox in Atlanta and it turns out to be her cousin. What are the odds of that?! I can't imagine how many people named Cox live in Atlanta, but it must be quite a few. Also, because he knows her cousin, did he realize that she is an Olympic athlete - maybe the cousin bragged about it at the time she won. Maybe that's why she had to get rid of him - he might have blown her cover.

Cox is a big name in Atlanta. There is Cox Communications which is run by two sisters, I believe. They are not african american but I guess that doesn't mean anything these days. And she could have just said that so and so was her cousin. When growing up, I said that really close family friends were cousins.

Being an Olympic athelete hasn't done squat for Crystal so far.

I think Marcus' big mistake was targeting Kenny. Why would Crystal, as stupid as she may be, want to kick out her #1 ally. By this point Marcus should have known that Susie, that old useless hag, was either out of the alliance or on her way out. It would have been a much easier sell to get Crystal to vote her out.

You know, I really hate it when you folks put out reviews for this show on the following Monday... but at least those extra 5 days give you the chance to put it in English.

Crystal Cox won the gold medal 2004, in the womens relay. She had the best time in the indoor 200m, but she cant 4 years later run, swim, dig, throw a ball, paddle, balance, or anything else seemingly athletic. It doesnt make sense. Was she on steriods then? she is pretty darn manly.

It's called sandbagging. She WANTS them to think she's totally inept. Remember, on "Survivor" the strongest aren't always the fittest.

I think she's had a few kids, and is out of training. You can clearly see she's gained a TON of weight over the past 4 years. You'll find with alot of athletes - especially the big, muscular ones - that if they weren't training, they'd be on their way to being obese. So i'm not too surprised that she's failing at challenges. Track and field puts alot of miles on the body.

I think Susie made the wrong choice by going with Crystal and Kenny. There isn't a Fang Four. Matty doesn't like Crystal and Sugar doesn't have an allegiance with them either. By choosing Crystal and Kenny, Susie basically set up her team with 3 players that still don't have a majority. I think Susie should have stuck with Marcus at least for the time being and tried to play her cards after the merge.

That being said, I'm biased and didn't want to see Marcus go. I just wish both alliances decided to work together and vote Susie out. The things she says...wow...what a moron! I don't know what she's thinking sometimes...

I can't quite understand Crystal's behavior. So she didn't want to ally with Marcus - fair enough. But to call him names like "snake" and whatnot after all he ever did was be nice to her and reach out to her as a friend, what's that all about?

That said, I agree voting him off was the best rational move for Kenny and Suzy. and very well played. As for Crystal, if she doesn't at least make the final four she may regret tonight's vote for the rest of her life.
