Palin to visit Desperate Housewives?

by Allison Waldman, posted Nov 14th 2008 8:03AM
Sarah AlaskaFile this one under the category of really, wild rumors that should become reality: Desperate Housewives wants Governor Sarah Palin to appear as a guest on the show.

Like I said, this is a rumor that cropped up yesterday, saying that head-writer/creator Marc Cherry was "very hot to trot to have her appear in the season finale." That was followed by an ABC spokesman denying that there's a shred of truth to the story.

Still, what if it's not such a Lucy Ricardo idea? Sarah Palin as a visitor to Wisteria Lane would be terrific -- and probably a boost in the ratings (which are doing great anyway, but still why not do even better?).

This is a great idea for a few reasons. First of all, she wouldn't have to use her own words. The Desperate Housewives' writers would create a character for her, give her good material and let her act. She's pretty good at reading off a prompter and sounding believable, so I have every confidence that she'd be excellent. In fact, I can't say for certain, but I would bet she's taken some acting lessons in her time, especially since her life-long dream was to be an ESPN broadcaster.

In the week-and-a-half since the election, the former Republican Vice Presidential candidate has been all over the TV screen. She did Larry King Live, an at-home with Matt Lauer on Today, a sit down with Fox, and yesterday was doing press conferences from the GOP Governors meeting in Miami. The woman is clearly more comfortable in front of a camera than any of us thought, so I say let her on Desperate Housewives.

I wouldn't presume to tell Cherry and company what kind of character to create. His inclination, say the rumor, is for her to play someone like herself -- a local politician with strong views on guns and family values. But maybe it would be funnier to see her play against type? Suppose she played an actress on a popular TV show -- a Tina Fey type -- who's famous for her impressions of a certain American politician? Or maybe she's an optometrist with a great collection of eyewear? The mind boggles at the choices.

On a purely political level, Sarah should do it. Any appearance keeps her name and face out there through the next four years until she can seriously get her Palin in 2012 campaign into full gear.

This rumor was HEAVILY discredited in the mainstream media yesterday once the source became known.

You guys should have read the most recent version of this story - it was a baseless hoax.

She certainly is a good actor, for a politician. Unfortunately, she is not that adept of a politician, and her chance at a place on a winning presidential ticket are zero. I welcome the Republicans to try her on the top of the ticket, because the speed of her loss and the magnitude of the Democrat's win that year would make 2008 appear a squeaker.

If she has any smarts at all about her (which I seriously doubt), she will finish out her current term as governer, then run for a second term. And then run for US senator for a couple terms. Maybe, just maybe, she might be able to run for president after that, after she's got some significant experience under her belt, and has learned how to string multiple coherent sentences together without reading from a teleprompter or memorized speech.

Speaking of playing against types, I think Palin should play the mother of Andrew's new boyfriend that was mentioned on the Spoiler Anonymous post. She can still portray a politician and that would make it even more funnier!!
