Bravo loves Kathy Griffin for another year
A couple of months back, in the midst of Project Runway leaving -- or trying to leave -- Bravo for Lifetime, a rumor was floated that Kathy Griffin wasn't sure about returning her show to Bravo as well. As a loyal and happy watcher of Kathy Griffin: My Life on the D-List, I was concerned. Fortunately, the rumor has turned out to be just that. Bravo announced that it has locked up Kathy Griffin to a new, one-year deal. It includes the fifth season for My Life, another edition of Bravo's A-List Awards with KG as the hostess, and two new comedy specials from the Emmy-winning D-lister. Excuse me while I pause to react -- YIPPEE!
Kathy Griffin has defined the right way to do a reality show. Her unscripted program gives us a look at her professional and personal life, but it's done with a comic flair that has just enough planning to keep us amused. There's a real quality to a pseudo-documentary series when the star allows us to see her not only at her best, but also her worst.
When Kathy's stand-up bombs -- as it has on occasion -- the cameras don't cut away. When Kathy's marriage fell apart, she talked about it in an honest way, looking into the camera and admitting how hurt she'd been to learn that Matt had been using her and lying about his feelings. And when Kathy's beloved father Johnny passed away, Kathy let us mourn for him with her through the show. This past season she visited injured veterans at Walter Reed Hospital.
Kathy's stand-up comedy concerts are also a plus for Bravo. Always topical and occasionally controversial -- her material about Barbara Walters got her banned from The View -- the specials are terrific.
In the wake of the Project Runway scrum -- which is still unresolved -- Bravo needed something good and this re-signing qualifies in my book. Bravo, Bravo...and Kathy, too.
