Thanksgiving with the Kardashians

by Allison Waldman, posted Nov 23rd 2008 3:21PM
KardashiansThanksgiving is a time for family, right? On TV, our favorite families have been The Waltons, The Huxtables, The Simpsons. But this year a vote has been taken and another family has emerged as America's favorite. The Kardashians. Yes, believe it or not, the People's Choice web site has done a survey and the family chosen by most respondents to spend Turkey Day with are E TV's Kardashians.

Starting at 1 o'clock on Thursday, November 27, E! will broadcast a Kardashian marathon, five hours of Keeping Up With The Kardashians. Yes, if you don't want to watch NFL games -- and considering the fact that we're forced to endure the horrid Detroit Lions every Thanksgiving, the 2008 winless Lions, you may want to turn away -- you can instead watch the rich, spoiled, outrageous Kardashians.

(Of course, there is an NFL connection if you count Reggie Bush, Kim's fiance, the star running back of the New Orleans Saints who's currently injured and not playing.)

Reality TV doesn't get much more crass than the K family. Tuning in to see their "unscripted" interaction is really quite a guilty pleasure. Spontaneous and real? No. Over the top and out of touch? Yes. Just keeping track of the latest lift to Bruce Jenner's face is fascinating. His forehead wasn't this tight when we won Olympic gold in the Summer of 1976.

You know, I could get all high and mighty and diss anybody who watches a show as formulaic as Keeping Up With The Kardashians, but in essence, if you liked The Osbournes, that's what this is like. (Only a lot better looking -- or is that shallow of me to mention?). It's empty-calories, junk food TV, but sometimes that's okay. You can watch Masterpiece Theater and Keeping Up With the Kardashians and still call yourself a TV fan. After all that turkey, empty calories might be all you can handle!
