Dexter: I Had a Dream

Dexter in Maria's office, reacting to the news that Miguel may have killed Elllen Wolf
(S03E11) All I have to say about that is ... whoo boy. It is rare to find a show that delivers quality episodes as consistently as Dexter does. I never come away disappointed, and I sure didn't tonight.

But how are they going to wrap this season up in one episode? My guess is that some loose ends will be left to continue next season, but the major ones will have some conclusion.

I can't even say anything until after the break, this episode was so darned spoilery, but I will say that Dexter did have a dream, as in the title of the episode, and now that dream is dead.

Ha! You like that one? I'm interpreting the talk Dexter has with Harry in the trunk of the car as Dexter's dream: trying to have a normal life and a friend. It clearly didn't work out for Dexter, as he had to kill that friend, and I can just see the foreshadowing that the rest of his normal life is going to hell in a handbasket in the season finale.

I had a surprise when Harry told Dexter he was brave for trying to lead a normal life and let someone in. I honestly didn't think that is how Harry would react; I would have thought he would look down on Dexter for breaking the code and sharing his "dark passenger" with Miguel. Dexter seemed surprised, too. Harry isn't all bad, and I like the way they are making him many shades of gray, not just black and white.

Back to Dexter killing Miguel. Dexter's setup was one of his more masterful ones; he wasn't letting anything go to chance for this kill. Seeing Miguel walk right into the syringe was unexpectedly satisfying ... should I be worrying about myself?

Dexter says that he will always be alone, obviously learning his lesson from opening up with Miguel. Again, though, I have to think this is some kind of foreshadowing that his marriage is just not going to happen. If we go back to one of the season premiere trailers, we seem to be promised that someone would die, and they insinuated it would be Deb or Rita. Will the Skinner, or maybe Ramon, kill Rita? Or was it just someone close to Dexter who had to die, and that person is Miguel? They way I interpret this trailer, it can be referencing Miguel. We didn't know that Dexter and Miguel would become close and share a secret when the promos were running, so I am holding out hope that they won't kill off Rita, since I can't imagine they'd get rid of Deb.

I'm so glad that Dexter stopped falling for Miguel's talk of trust and friendship. Miguel's desperation on his deathbed was pathetic, throwing all that "friends forgive" crap at Dexter. Dexter just threw it right back at him, with his "friends are honest" crap:
"I accept you Dexter. I accept you like a brother." -- Miguel
"I killed my brother. I killed yours, too." -- Dexter
The ending of the episode was particularly well done. Even the cinematography was perfection. We get Dexter strangling Miguel, saying "Adios Amigo," in a very sinister voice, and the closeup on Dexter fading to black and white. So nicely done, poignant, perfect.

In other news:
  • You all suspected that Dexter was kidnapped by Masuka for his bachelor party; nice call!
  • They are really setting up Angel for a fall with Barbara; she's more suspicious now that she's thinking "men have needs" and she expected Angel to meet those needs at the bachelor party. She's a bit of a deviant, methinks.
  • I'm betting Masuka will get a regular girlfriend in Tammy next season. If not, at least we got this great quote after Masuka found out about her background check: "That means she's got issues. So she's not out of my league."
  • I thought it was a bit unrealistic that Miguel's computer warned him that Maria was checking the evidence on Ellen Wolf, but my computer geek husband assures me that it can be done. Whadaya know?
  • Quinn explains to Deb that an uncle died and left him a building in Boston, which is why he can afford the car and the watch. I'm not buying it. You think Quinn is working for Miguel? Someone's giving him inside information, and the computer server being down was suspicious.
  • Poor Anton is so damaged; Deb really needed to reach out to him more than just a hand-holding. Do you think Anton will be back for Deb next season? Will she at least bring him to the wedding?
  • When Dexter told Deb that Harry cheated on their mother with a CI, Dex spit out a classic Dexterism: "You always wanted to be like dad."
  • Maria is no dummy. Now that Miguel is dead, will she use the information and out Miguel as Ellen Wolf's killer?
  • Loved the scene when Dexter asks Deb to be his best man. He's right; it was perfectly fitting and I am so glad it dawned on him. The writers have done such a good job in growing the relationship between Deb and Dexter. Contrary to what Dexter thinks of himself, he is able to make human connections.
OK, chime in with your thoughts about this episode and speculate how you think this season of Dexter could end. Anyone willing to put a whole scenario out there?

I think this was the best season ever - or maybe one of the two best. I didn't think anybody could be scarier than Lila but Miguel pulled it off. Dexter just gets better and better. The writing, directing, acting -- everything is fantastic. I LOVE Anton. Please please bring him back, although I liked it better before he and Deb were lovey-dovey. Love sexual tension and that's the only thing that Dexter lacked. I love Debra's character. They better not ever kill her off. They could never replace her. I am suspicious of Quinn and wonder where that's going, but I've read that he won't be back next season. I couldn't confirm that.

I think that Dexter is Harry's biological son and he knew it which is why he rescued just him and let the brother who WASN'T his son go to foster care. It doesn't make sense to rescue one little kid and not both any other way. I think Deb is going to find out that Dex is her half brother and tell Dex which will really conflict him when he finds out that Harry is his real father. Why else would he only rescue ONE of the kids?? You either send both to foster care or take in both ESPECIALLY WHEN YOU KNOW THEY ARE BROTHERS!! It only makes sense that Harry takes just Dexter if he knows he is Dexter's father. Look at the resemblance between Deb and Dex--do you think the producers didn't pick actors that have similar hair and coloring for a reason?? Deb is going to find out that Dex is her half brother and tell him for the season finale--that's a real finale!

I gotta agree with those who weren't swept away. I liked this season a lot more than I thought possible, but it's gotten a bit predictable. 1) Dexter gets close to someone. 2) That someone seems like they've got their head screwed on straight. but they're actually complete sociopaths. 3) Dexter has to put them down.

I'm afraid I found it kind of hard to buy that this A.D.A. is secretly a wannabe serial killer. Just doesn't work. Plus I'm not a huge fan of Smits. He was okay in this role, but his work is middling. Compare him to Carradine or Jaime Murray (Lila) from last season and I think you have to agree that they were stellar.

The scene between Dexter and Deb was easily the best of the ep, I agree. A genuine moment of connection (and was that emotion?) for Dexter. Very satisfying.

this season's story line, albeit a bit slow, was absolutely necessary.
Dexter from season 1 and 2 was a very 1-dimensional character, however from season 3 we see that he has a desire to be somewhat 'normal', to have a friend, a confidant. Also to rebel against the 'code'. however, reality sinks in and dexter finds that the only friends he could every have would have to be psycopaths too.
cant wait for season 4!

It's ridiculous how easily LaGuerta just gave up on Miguel.

Dex: Oh, just forget about it.
LaGuerta: Yeah, you're right. I will.

Like it's a hundredth time when someone kills her friend.

Yeah, if the conversation went like that, that would be stupid. But that is *not* how it went.

He was the voice of reason to a very emotional person. Emotional, but also professional. He made her realize rash decisions would not be the way to go.

heres my take on this:

This show has always been good...i can think of an episode that i didnt like...Dexter tied to that table was the last Prado brothers doing. Every victim of the Skinner has been sitting in a chair...If Deb finds out Harry's affair was with Laura Mossier, will she realize who her kids were/are? What will be the fate of George Washington King?

also, maybe this was just me, but the fact they always billed Jimmy Smits as "Special Guest Star" always bugged me. They should a changed the opening to "With James Remar, and Jimmy Smits" But maybe thats just me.

I believe Rita is safe from the chopping block. She's the only sex appeal this show has (well, for men) and her character is the human side of Dexter. Unlike you, I think that while Dexter's dream of sharing his dark passenger is dead, he's open to friends. What he did for Angel last episode is proof of that. What he did this episode for Maria is proof of that. He may be gray and he may be a murderer but he's also loyal to those who are loyal to him.

I think one of the big mysteries for either the finale--though it will have to carry over to next season--will be Deb uncovering Dexter's heritage/parentage. Sooner or later she's going to figure out that Dexter was adopted by Harry because he was the CI's child and eventually she's going to connect the dots that the Ice Truck killer/her former lover and Dex are brothers. If we've learned one thing in 3 seasons it is that Deb really is a great cop.

I guess my referring to it as a bad episode is based around this whole season being very campy and contrived compared to the brilliant standard that was set in the first 2 seasons. The last episode where Miguel and Dexter had their blow out, really revived the season and set the stage for a brilliant follow up - but I'm sorry - the bachelor party kidnapping and the skinner suddenly becoming a non-factor seemed like a poor attempt to revive the 'unpredicatability' factor of the past 2 seasons. Which ultimately led to this episode being very anticlimactic (not to mention the holes in the storyline). Dexter seems more like a comic book superhero than the conflicted serial killer that he was in seasons past. I really hope something extremely dramatic happens in the season finale. If not, the show will probably end soon, or it will become a permanent fixture on network television. Aimed more at generating revenue than substance.

The cell phone / finding room part is not a flaw/plothole!The hotel room phone wouldn't just stop ringing, it's actually quite obvious that after he asks the operator to transfer him to Miguel that the scene cut to a little later on when dexter is still searching for the ring.

Good episode indeed, I think this season has needed some unpredictablity after the rest of this seasons predictablity level have been throught the roof (still been on my edge of the seat loving the show thought).

I do agree there was some filler in tonights episode but not a big deal of it.

The stag night scene and the twist there was brilliant and shot wonderfully along with the finale.

I just love this show too darn much, yeah it may have been abit slow paced this season but it's definetly not been boring!

Dexter is still on his "A" game!

You explain your disappointment with Season Three very well, when compared to the first two seasons. The first two seasons build up suspense very well, where Season Three was more subdued and erratic at times.

Having said that, I'm not too irked by Season Three because I find Jimmy Smits' acting amazing. I can't say that the writing for the season topped the previous two. Not at all.

they need to submit ths episode for emmy considerations. Great writing, great acting(the Deb/Dex cheating scene and the final scene in particular) and great direction. Too many things to get into, but let me say this. For people who say there is no quality TV on anymore, I say tonight you were proven wrong.

I agree about Smits, this was by far the best role he's ever played, and by that I mean his best performance. I've never thought of him as much of an actor until this role. I didn't like him in West Wing all that much, but once Sorkin left after season four, I hated everything about the show. Didn't like him in Star Wars, but George Lucas somehow manages to get the worst out of whatever actors he's using.

Or maybe I'm just happy, as a criminal defense lawyer myself, to finally see a prosecutor portrayed on TV as an evil, lying, two-bit criminal, murderous asshole, since usually on TV shows (and movies) the DA's are the great and wonderful crimefighters standing up for the victims and the helpless and the criminal defense lawyers are the scumbags. Here, Ellen Wolf was the "hero" and always did the right thing, and was even willing to defend Miguel Prado were he to be facing criminal charges, as any good defense lawyer would do (it's not about who your client is or what they did, it's about making sure everyone gets the fair trial and competent defense to which they're entitled). Smits played the evil "I can do whatever I want whenever I want" prosecutor to a T. Perfect. I've met many a prosecutor just like him, except for, perhaps, the serial killing.
