Jericho and Supernatural producers team up for Showtime's Syns

by Mike Moody, posted Dec 8th 2008 2:04PM
tricia helfer battelstar galactica sixThat zany Cylon god just answered some lucky fanboy's prayers. Showtime is developing Syns, a sci-fi drama about a world in which humans create synthetic life forms for "various purposes." Since Showtime is the pay cable network that gave us Californication, The L Word and Debbie Does Dallas Again, I'm guessing several of those "purposes" might fall under the TV-MA category. All those Battlestar Galactica fans who ever wished to see more than just a sexy cyborg's glowing spine can start anticipating this show .... now!

Syns was originally developed in the UK by Clerkenwell Films under the name Doll's Hospital, which probably sounded too much like Dollhouse for a run in the U.S. The series will be set in a dealership and workshop where the synthetic organisms, or Syns, are sold as luxury items, Clerkenwell chief exec Murray Ferguson told Broadcast Now. Jericho consulting producer John McNamara and Supernatural producer/writer Sera Gamble are developing the series.

So, is this the influence of Battlestar Galactica? The Syns sound pretty Cylon-esque, and the "various purposes" line reminds me of Battlestar's numerous scenes of robot lovin'. (I know, dirty mind). Actually, the idea for this series reminds me of the trailer for Caprica, the upcoming Battlestar prequel series about the development of cybernetic organisms. Syns and Caprica will probably premiere around 2010. Will sci-fi fans find room in their hearts for two dramas about the age of human-like robots?

Lots of robots in shows these days...It's weird...I never thought of them as being cool until now...

Looks like its time for me to cancel Cinemax and pick up showtime.

Actually, the plot makes me think of the "Replicants" from the movie "Bladerunner."

A dirtier, sexier "Battlestar Galactica"? Without Tricia Helfer or even Grace Park? What's the point?

I think we have Galactica to thank for the "scifi drama," or at least for popularizing the genre on television. I'm happy that Showtime added one to their slate especially, since they will likely explore much deeper issues and develop edgier story lines than the big three commercial networks can or would with a similar project.

Showtime has been knocking them out of the park lately, so depending upon the cast, I'll probably tune in at least once. Sounds a bit too much like Dollhouse to me, however. Just synthetic peeps instead of human. Same end-game?

This doesn't sound like Supernatural or Jericho at all. It's just a dirtier Battlestar Galactica.

I'll pass.

Come on, this is Showtime we are talking about. They have a pretty fantastic track record, and while I'm sure it will have its share of titillation, I think the show overall could be pretty good.
