Pushing Daisies: The Norwegians
(S02E10) "Chuck's father is alive?" - OliveI'm sad. Even if, contrary to what I reported a few weeks back, Pushing Daisies' final episode ever - episode 2.13 - will offer some closure to most characters thanks to last minute editing and retooling, I'm sad as "The Norwegians" could very well have been the last episode we will see of the series on a TV screen. ABC claims it plans to air the final three hours as a block sometime in the near future but fans know networks can change their mind rather quickly, especially when money talks. Will ABC live up to its promise? Will they put the episodes online? Or, worse, will we have to wait months and months to watch them on DVD?
No matter the answers to these questions, we should cherish "The Norwegians" as we don't know when we will see our favorite pie maker and his crew next. One thing is for sure, the episode gave us a lot of action and left us saying "WTF?" and "OMG!"
Let's tackle the big reveal first: Ned's father now looks a lot like George Hamilton! I didn't see that reveal coming up at all! I expected him to look like in the flashbacks but with grey hair. Okay, okay, I know... enough with the joking. Let's tackle the real big reveal: Ned's father is not only sitting at the Pie Hole but it looks like he is the one who saved Olive and Ned from death, and the one who dug Dwight up and set his death scene at the hotel.
Does this mean that not only Ned's father has been keeping tabs on his son from afar but that he also knows about Ned's powers? If so, why has he not tried to reach out to Ned so they could have a one on one? Could it be possible that Ned's father also has powers or maybe that he was appointed as a sort of guardian angel over Ned by The Powers That Be? Maybe he's just a normal guy who decided to reconnect with his son in the recent weeks and, before having a one on one talk with Ned, decided to see what he was up to by spying on him for a while? What do you think about the big reveal? Share your theories in comments below.
The other big reveal of the episode was Ned deciding that he would not use his powers anymore because of the bad things that happen when he does. It's a given that the show's writers had no intention of having Ned keep that promise but in Ned's world, this decision will affect a lot of people.
First, Emerson. You can bet he won't be a happy man when he hears the news because without Ned, he'll have to do more detective work to solve crimes. Secondly, Chuck and Olive. Both loved going undercover to help solve mysteries. They can still do it but you can bet that Emerson will not be quick on calling on them - especially on Chuck - when he needs help. Lastly, the families of the deceased. Thanks to Ned powers, they were given closure. Yes, maybe Emerson and/or the cops can still provide answers and find the killers but it could take weeks or months compared to what Ned could offer them.
Since we know Ned will eventually use his powers again, question is when and why? Will someone really close to him die and he'll have no choice but to touch them to solve the murder case? Maybe Emerson will scare Ned in using his powers again! Who knows, eh? We shall learn the answers whenever ABC decides that we can watch the remaining episodes.
Other tidbits of interest:
- I am always amazed at how loyal Olive is to the gang even if she is never given the complete answers. She knows a few more tidbits now, like Chuck's father being alive, but she is still not in the know, that Charles has not faked his death... I wonder if one time she'll really leave the gang for not including her more.
- Magnus, Nils and Hedda - aka The Norwegians - were hilarious! How fun was it to see them battle it off with our favorite sleuths? "Mother," the outfits and the Batman-like toolbelts made them even more fun to watch. I hope they return in the comic book version of the series to seek revenge.
- Poor Vivian. She was so truly madly deeply in love with Dwight that she couldn't see the ugly truth about the man. It was heartbreaking when she finally admitted the man was bad. Luckily, her sister was there for support.
