Pushing Daisies: The Norwegians

Pushing Daisies(S02E10) "Chuck's father is alive?" - Olive

I'm sad. Even if, contrary to what I reported a few weeks back, Pushing Daisies' final episode ever - episode 2.13 - will offer some closure to most characters thanks to last minute editing and retooling, I'm sad as "The Norwegians" could very well have been the last episode we will see of the series on a TV screen. ABC claims it plans to air the final three hours as a block sometime in the near future but fans know networks can change their mind rather quickly, especially when money talks. Will ABC live up to its promise? Will they put the episodes online? Or, worse, will we have to wait months and months to watch them on DVD?

No matter the answers to these questions, we should cherish "The Norwegians" as we don't know when we will see our favorite pie maker and his crew next. One thing is for sure, the episode gave us a lot of action and left us saying "WTF?" and "OMG!"

Let's tackle the big reveal first: Ned's father now looks a lot like George Hamilton! I didn't see that reveal coming up at all! I expected him to look like in the flashbacks but with grey hair. Okay, okay, I know... enough with the joking. Let's tackle the real big reveal: Ned's father is not only sitting at the Pie Hole but it looks like he is the one who saved Olive and Ned from death, and the one who dug Dwight up and set his death scene at the hotel.

Does this mean that not only Ned's father has been keeping tabs on his son from afar but that he also knows about Ned's powers? If so, why has he not tried to reach out to Ned so they could have a one on one? Could it be possible that Ned's father also has powers or maybe that he was appointed as a sort of guardian angel over Ned by The Powers That Be? Maybe he's just a normal guy who decided to reconnect with his son in the recent weeks and, before having a one on one talk with Ned, decided to see what he was up to by spying on him for a while? What do you think about the big reveal? Share your theories in comments below.

The other big reveal of the episode was Ned deciding that he would not use his powers anymore because of the bad things that happen when he does. It's a given that the show's writers had no intention of having Ned keep that promise but in Ned's world, this decision will affect a lot of people.

First, Emerson. You can bet he won't be a happy man when he hears the news because without Ned, he'll have to do more detective work to solve crimes. Secondly, Chuck and Olive. Both loved going undercover to help solve mysteries. They can still do it but you can bet that Emerson will not be quick on calling on them - especially on Chuck - when he needs help. Lastly, the families of the deceased. Thanks to Ned powers, they were given closure. Yes, maybe Emerson and/or the cops can still provide answers and find the killers but it could take weeks or months compared to what Ned could offer them.

Since we know Ned will eventually use his powers again, question is when and why? Will someone really close to him die and he'll have no choice but to touch them to solve the murder case? Maybe Emerson will scare Ned in using his powers again! Who knows, eh? We shall learn the answers whenever ABC decides that we can watch the remaining episodes.

Other tidbits of interest:
  • I am always amazed at how loyal Olive is to the gang even if she is never given the complete answers. She knows a few more tidbits now, like Chuck's father being alive, but she is still not in the know, that Charles has not faked his death... I wonder if one time she'll really leave the gang for not including her more.
  • Magnus, Nils and Hedda - aka The Norwegians - were hilarious! How fun was it to see them battle it off with our favorite sleuths? "Mother," the outfits and the Batman-like toolbelts made them even more fun to watch. I hope they return in the comic book version of the series to seek revenge.
  • Poor Vivian. She was so truly madly deeply in love with Dwight that she couldn't see the ugly truth about the man. It was heartbreaking when she finally admitted the man was bad. Luckily, her sister was there for support.

To Emmet: I forgot to say this in my last comment. I love that idea you have. I really do want to see a happy ending between Ned & Chuck (as I'm sure most fans do). I want a happy ending & I want to see it on television or in a movie! I really hope they can make one of those happen. fingers crossed...

I am so mad that this show is cancelled. I've been in denial. The story line just keeps getting better, yet they're cancelling it. Now, we get more reality shows. yay! (sarcasm) I absolutely loved this episode. To lou.damalso: I also came up with that theory. It makes sense as to why his father would abandon him & why he's back in his life.

ahh I'm just so frustrated that we won't be able to see this wonderful stories on television!

The facts are these...

Comic books are nice, but you can't get the same lyrical cadence to the dialog that is such a calling card of the series.

I think the best we could hope for is what they are doing with "dead like me" a direct to DVD movie to wrap up the loose ends.

If the DVD sales of the second season are strong, maybe enough of the players can be motivated to give us a proper finale.

lou, just wanted to say great theory concerning neds dad and it got me thinking, I wish to build onto your theory and propose a potentail way to quickly ( I HATE that this wonderful show has been cancelled) end the series.

Chuck will be killed again but ressurected by Neds father and since Ned has nothing to do with her 2nd ressurection it'll nullify the conditions of his powers thereby allowing Ned and Chuck to be able to touch. it'd be very neat, if they do indeed go that way but if this show doesn't deserve an unashamedly fairytale happy ending then what show does??

Leah and Philip, I'm in the same boat. KTUL cut the show two weeks ago to air a Larry Jones special and some Oak Ridge Boys or other special this week. KTUL did not, as they told me last time, have info on their site telling of the change. I was lucky enough to be up at around 3AM the following Sat or Sun (don't remember which) and caught the re-airing. I'm hoping they do that again. I've contacted them again this time around. Makes me wonder if they've just assumed that the program is cancelled so why bother airing it when they can get some more righteous programming on.

bob-o I agree. For the most part. I'm not a big fan of 'Scrubs' but it's better than most ABC sitcoms. 'Fringe' kept me fascinated for awhile but once I missed two sequential episodes it was impossible to catch up. I may have to get that one on DVD. 'Life' is good.

ABC's decision to cut loose 'Pushing Daisies' is just idiotic. Not surprising though. Most network exec's have their heads up their asses.

HOW can they pick up scrubs (one of my other beloved shows) and let this masterpiece go? it chugs along and gets better and more fascinating every week. i hope we can keep fringe and life alive.

I loved Jim Dale's "Oh Hell No!" That's something you won't hear on the Harry Potter audio books.

I didn't get to see this yet since KTUL keeps pre-empting this for local "specials" instead. At least there is ABC.com. Why do they insist on pre-empting new episodes? They could at least pre-empt when there is a re-run.

I suspect Ned's father killed Chuck on the cruise ship. The character in the comic book wore a distinctly similar ski mask like the one Ned & Olive's rescuer did last night.

My guess is that Ned's dad also has "the Touch" and had revived Ned without his knowlage after first killing him by proximity during another revival . then sent him away to boarding school to avoid ever touching him again.

He's been keeping an eye on him all this time but itwasn't until Ned entered the new twin kids' lives that he got directly involved

Oh I love this theory. I would have to rewatch the flashbacks to see if Ned's father ever touches Ned skin-to-skin. That would explain why Ned's father was entirely covered up when he rescued Olive and Ned. Very interesting.

That's a REALLY awesome theory! Hopefully this is one storyline that does get closure via the TV series (though I guess comics aren't that bad).

I missed Pushing Daisies for the 2nd time in 3 weeks last night. And it wasn't my fault. The stupid ABC affiliate here, KTUL, decided to air a christmas special instead last night, even though their website said pushing daisies was going to be on. And you know, once be, well not good, but I can handle it. But to show the EXACT SAME stupid show twice in 3 weeks instead of Pushing Daisies really makes me mad. So mad, I sent an email to the station manager and told him/her that I would never watch their channel again and I will tell everyone else I know to do the same. It's not right.
