MTV completely abandons music
This economy is really starting to hurt even the most vacuous of channels. In what has to be the most extreme example of channel drift I've ever seen, MTV is adding 16 new reality television shows to its lineup.According to the article, the shows will not be about wealthy, superficial people acting in a pompous and sociopathic manner but rather about the affirmation of accomplishment. That being said, the only possible series of those listed that I might be interested in is the one produced by Trey Parker and Matt Stone (or their Variety pseudonym "Matt Parker and Trey Stone").
Granted, MTV pioneered the genre with The Real World, but this goes beyond gratuitous. It's purely a cost-cutting measure and I'm willing to bet (or perhaps "hoping" would be a better term) that most of these shows don't make it past their first season.
Perhaps, and this is just me talking off the top of my head, MTV (which stands for Music Television) could actually turn back the clock and be about music again? Maybe giving up-and-coming talented musicians some screen time? At least then if the network fails it could die gracefully.
