And the new Doctor Who is...

by Brad Trechak, posted Jan 3rd 2009 10:32PM
Doctor WhoWe already mentioned something about it, but for those fans of the show who actually haven't read the news yet, here it is. As a warning, the video can only be watched from the U.K. (I never understood that particular habit of the BBC. Why do they limit who can view their videos like that?).

I am leaving the spoiler until after the jump so nobody decides to blow up my house in retaliation for ruining the surprise.

So as the 11th Doctor we have the relatively unknown Matt Smith, who is both male and white (thus disappointing my desire for the next Doctor to be of a different race or gender). He's also looks thin like David Tennant. The fact that an unknown actor was chosen doesn't surprise me. British bookmakers must be ecstatic at keeping a lot of money since I didn't see Matt Smith on any of the lists.

At 26 years old, he's younger than any of the previous actors who have inherited the role. In fact, if you look at the press release, he looks like something out of Twilight. That's when it struck me...

They must be going to the young female demographic that made that movie and book so popular, possibly the Goths or Vampires. They already have the male demographic, so the showrunners are probably trying to expand the base. The publicity photos are quite dark and foreboding. Are they going for the dark, emo Doctor the next time around?

As for his age, perhaps the Time Lords age backwards with each regeneration. Maybe the 12th Doctor will in fact be 12 years old.

I'm somewhat disappointed in the choice, but I trust Steven Moffat to make things interesting. What are your thoughts?

Well, at 31, in today's society I guess I'm pretty much a dinosaur. I was introduced to Doctor Who with Tom Baker and he remains my favorite. After that I rank Hartnell, Troughton, and McCoy equally. The others rank lower but mostly equal, except for Eccelston--I still can't handle the idea of a doctor with a buzz cut and a black leather jacket. Right now I'm a bit hostile towards the BBC. When I saw David Morrisey on screen as what I thought was the new Doctor, I went absolutely nuts. I thought he was the best Doctor since Tom Baker and was really excited. When the rug was pulled out from under me and I found out it was this Matt Smith guy, I felt like the BBC had literally slapped me in the face. I suppose I'll give the new guy a chance, but he'll have to really impress me to break down my hostility. And for God's sake, would they please stop having the Doctor dress so modern? Where is the quirky blend of 19th century and generally bohemian wardrobe that so endeared the earlier doctors to me? I get really annoyed at some of the choices they're making these days--enough that I'm almost ready to give up on the show completely.

I have no problem with another color or race, but NOT female. I guess it is because I grew up with the Doctor, and I like him male. And yes, I'm female, and a child of the sixties. Anyway, I'm not sure about this one. A tad too young, maybe. I will wait and see. I did read a rumor that David and Billie might be in an episode. As Doctor clone and Rose? Hmmm. And I really, really don't like Moffett. I think his idea of the Doctor is not really what I like. But again, I will wait and see.

BTW, I'd also like to point out the glaring error in Brad's title. The show is called "Doctor Who", not the main character. He's simply "The Doctor".

So, a proper title would've been, "And the new Doctor is...", sans "Who". The title as it is makes no sense.

I had all my chips on James Nesbitt. That would have been a hell of a Doctor!

I cannot believe you are all getting up in arms and playing "I can't see it here, why should you see it there" games about the damned video. In this day in age its idiotic that ALL content shouldn't be seen worldwide... Now quit yer yappin and chat Dr Who please.

As others have said, the BBC is funded BY the British public FOR the British public. Yup. We're a bunch of tea-drinking socialists, and proud of it.

The producers already have a stinkingly big fanbase, so I'm sure they don't intend to mix things up to such a degree and risk all of that.

My own post on the subject (http://firu.wordpress.com/2009/01/04/doctor-who/) links to yours, so I thought I'd pop by and give you my opposing view. I was unsure about the decision at first too, but the more I learn, the more faith I have.

However the show turns out, it'll be sad to see David Tennant go. He has done so much for the roll.
