NBC's new show: man loses job and girlfriend, gains a soundtrack

NBC logoHey, if CBS can have a Game Show In My Head, NBC can have music.

The network has given the go-ahead to a new show from All Of Us/Baby Bob writer Jared Bush titled Soundtrack. It's about a guy who loses his job and his girlfriend and then starts to hear the same song in his head over and over and over again. The song doesn't go away until he finds what meaning it has in his life. Then the next episode has him hearing another song and he'll have to find out what that meaning is too.

That's a really odd plot for a TV show. Sounds like a cross between Eli Stone and My Name Is Earl. I picture someone like Tom Cavanagh in the role (and not just for the losing-job-and-woman plot). It could be ridiculously engaging or get old after two weeks. I guess a big part of it will be the songs they choose. Let's hope that the songs aren't just the latest hits, and let's also hope they get a deal to use the songs on the future DVDs or they're going to be really boring.

I used to work with a guy who said that New Age music was the soundtrack to his life. I really hope that's not the music this show will feature.

I don't see how this can last... But Josh Schwartz is great at picking songs, and has some good indy stuff. Maybe consult with him a bit.

I remember waaaaaaaaaay back in the early 80's there was a show called "Lottery!". It was the same plot every week - Man from the lottery office tracks down someone who won a lot of money. It lasted one season.

I would think this has a life cycle of one season also.

Eli Stone did it better.

I'll stick with Eli Stone to the bitter end.

It really all depends on the writing, the actors involved and the publicity and time slot that the network is prepared to give the show.

I mean, a comedy about doctors that have fantasy sequences may not have sounded like a great idea, but it worked for Scrubs. A show about nothing worked for Seinfield and who would have thought that a show based off of a one season sci-fi flop from the 70's would turn into Battlestar Gallatica, which is often name the best show on TV by many critics.

Also a close rip off of Eli Stone. The first episode was about a George Michael song, and finding out what it meant.

I suggest to NBC, rather than producing this drivel, go pick up Eli Stone off the scrap heap.
