Supernatural fans get their act together
Never underestimate what an organized group of fans can accomplish. Just look at what those Jerico 'Nuts' were able to do. A few days in advance of the show's mid-season return, Supernatural fans have launched their second annual charity drive/ratings ploy called Support Supernatural. The campaign aims to collect donations on behalf of the show's hunky stars, Jared Padaleki and Jensen Ackles, and provide a little press for the CW show. It all sounds fine and altruistic, but why does it feel, I don't know, just a little bit creepy?Fans often get a bad rap, and sci-fi fans often get the worst of it, so its nice to see fans channel their passion into a worthwhile cause rather than, say, stalking the stars on vacation. But I have to admit that stuff like this does strike me as a tad off. I admire their altruistic bent, but donating money as a "tribute" to a celebrity feels like a form of fan worship, rather than a genuine urge to do good. Maybe I'm just being too cynical and this if what a fan community really should do---organize to make a small difference. But, the website is worth checking out just for its retro-vibe, complete with a flaming "welcome" banner across the top.
Donations will benefit the Best Friends Animal Society and Make-A-Wish Foundation International, both great causes the actors have supported in the past. The groups organizers report that they raised $5,000 last year and are aiming for $10,000 this year. Donations on behalf of both actors can be made via SupportSupernatural.com or at Best Friends Animal Society and Make-A-Wish Foundation International
Anyway, go ahead and donate, before it degenerates into a popularity contest to determine who's cuter. The campaign runs until August 2009, so you have plenty of time.
