Supernatural fans get their act together

by Hemal Jhaveri, posted Jan 8th 2009 5:03PM
Never underestimate what an organized group of fans can accomplish. Just look at what those Jerico 'Nuts' were able to do. A few days in advance of the show's mid-season return, Supernatural fans have launched their second annual charity drive/ratings ploy called Support Supernatural. The campaign aims to collect donations on behalf of the show's hunky stars, Jared Padaleki and Jensen Ackles, and provide a little press for the CW show. It all sounds fine and altruistic, but why does it feel, I don't know, just a little bit creepy?

Fans often get a bad rap, and sci-fi fans often get the worst of it, so its nice to see fans channel their passion into a worthwhile cause rather than, say, stalking the stars on vacation. But I have to admit that stuff like this does strike me as a tad off. I admire their altruistic bent, but donating money as a "tribute" to a celebrity feels like a form of fan worship, rather than a genuine urge to do good. Maybe I'm just being too cynical and this if what a fan community really should do---organize to make a small difference. But, the website is worth checking out just for its retro-vibe, complete with a flaming "welcome" banner across the top.

Donations will benefit the Best Friends Animal Society and Make-A-Wish Foundation International, both great causes the actors have supported in the past. The groups organizers report that they raised $5,000 last year and are aiming for $10,000 this year. Donations on behalf of both actors can be made via SupportSupernatural.com or at Best Friends Animal Society and Make-A-Wish Foundation International

Anyway, go ahead and donate, before it degenerates into a popularity contest to determine who's cuter. The campaign runs until August 2009, so you have plenty of time.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with what is being done. I 100% support the site and have helped all I can to promote the site and the show. I know Jared is very appreciative of what is being done. I'm sure Jensen is too. I myself have donated to charities in their honor. It's kind of like my 'thank you' to the actors and everyone associated with the show for their hard work.
It's amazing to see just how much good can be done because of a show. I think people take stuff like this and get creeped out because they dont understand just how much the show and the actors mean to the fans.
Thanks for posting the article. It gives the site and the show more publicity.

First, good for the fans who are making the effort to do something positive with the fandom instead of spending all their time slobbering over the boys. (Though there's nother wrong with that, either!) And I totally resent the snarky, hateful undertones of the article and a few responses. In a very "me" centered world, some fans decided to mobilize their friends to contribute to causes that the stars of the show support.

Jense and Jared both throw their support behind causes that mean something to them. Why do you suppose celebs do that? They know that their names and fanbases will get behind the cause also. DUH! I think they must be pleased and touched to get fans behind these causes and the idea that it's "creepy" is just simply mean.

Part of the draw for this fandom is just how nice and down to earth these two guys are and they inspire the same in their fans.

So, instead of criticizing two women who give up time and effort to support charties out of the goodness of their hearts, how 'bout you get inspired and do something yourself. I don't know these ladies but I see what they've worked so hard to do and I'm impressed. I'm also impressed with the grace they used to respond to this snotty little poke at their motivations.

Rock on, Ladies!

Suz

What is so awesome about these girls, the fundraisers, the website and all of the hard work that goes into all of these is that they DON'T do it for the applause or the face time. None of us that donates or tries to come up with ideas on ways to support SN expect that stuff either. If applause or face time come along with it, great! but that's not the ultimage goal. It's a great show that gets very little support from anywhere other than us, its 'creepy' fans. I, for one, am proud to be creepy :)

These ladies gather us together, unite us with one voice to work for a common goal which is to support this AWESOME show in as many ways as possible. Certainly the charities appreciate each dollar given and even though the stars of the show don't ask us to donate, they've made their charity preferences available for SOME reason, right? Maybe so people will reach a little deeper and give?

There are no losers here...except maybe the naysayers who think everyone has an angle. My suggestion to them is to donate some money and see how good you feel that you're supporting a show you love and also giving money to some great causes.

Join us. Support the show. Support the charities. It's all good.

The Support Supernatural ladies are wonderful and they work very hard on their site and for their cause. Thank you both for all that you do. We appreciate you!

Thanks so much for drawing attention to this great fundraiser. These girls are outstanding human beings who are passionate about these two great charities, these two great men and this amazing show that we all love. I cannot possibly express how proud I am of what they have done and what the future holds for them this year. Anyone who has negative things to say about them or the fundraiser need to really examine why they feel this way. None of what they've said is based on fact, and it seems there is some underlying jealousy-type issues going on here. Please do not allow them to distract from such a positive experience for Support Supernatural and the fans who support these fine women.

Thanks Hemal for posting this article!

It's not a all creepy at all! I know these two personally and they are both outstanding individuals.Their efforts to raise money for several needy organizations is something that they do in their everyday lives as well as in the fandom.

As for TrueSNFans comment above, they never once complained about anything and as for the website comment, why spend money on some fancy webpage when it can be given to a charity that needs it more?

As for using it to get "facetime" that's a ridiculous idea! If they were doing it for that, they would have bought the guys useless presents, not raise thousands of dollars for charitable causes.

Sammy here.

I agree with mel/ebbtide and erin. These girls are the greatest at what they do. The are the most caring people i know and what they are doing is not for the "face-time" that some of the posters have said but for the animals and children it will help. We are a very passionate fandom and it makes me proud to be part it.

As for creepy? it's not creepy at all, it's heartwarming to see in these terrible times, people of all walks of life coming together, through their love of Supernatural, Jared & Jensen, as friends to bring hope and love to those (animals & children) that are less fortunate. And to give the show and the guys the recognition that the CW has seem to forgotten about!

My hats off to the ladies of Support Supernatural! As for the site? I LOVE IT!!!! IT ROCKS!!!!!

peace.

I gotta agree with both Erin & Ebbtide.
The girls at Support Supernatural are all about the good deeds and raising money for worthy charities. It is not creepy at all. And no they aren't out for the "facetime" as some of you have put it. They could really care less about that. They just want to get Supernatural noticed and give the fans a way of getting involved by helping out charities.

To TrueSNfan: Way to twist the truth!! *eyeroll*

Thanks anyway for the article Hemal.

P.S.
Please pardon the strident negative tone of some responses. You're getting a couple of personal beefs in the mix ...
