Movies on TV: Feb. 1-7
Don't miss Oscar-worthy performances by Denzel Washington and Tom Hanks in two of this week's must-see flicks ...Pixar is usually the studio to go to for great animated flicks.
But 'Monster House' challenges that theory with a clever and hilarious story that the whole family can enjoy. It also features a number of famous voices, so plan your guessing games accordingly.
Also airing this week are films with two Oscar-worthy performances: 'Forrest Gump' and 'Malcolm X.' Hanks won a 2nd Oscar for the sentimental charmer, while Washington inexplicably lost in a close race against Al Pacino. After seeing the three-hour-plus epic, you'll feel our pain.

'Monster House'Sun., Feb. 1, 7PM on TOON
Synopsis: No adults believe three youths' (Mitchel Musso, Spencer Locke, Sam Lerner) assertion that a neighboring residence is a living creature that means them harm.
Famous Voices: 'Monster House' also features the voices of movie stars like Steve Buscemi, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Kathleen Turner.
Our Take: Both funny and scary, this Oscar-nominated flick is one of the few animated features to rival the Pixar franchise.

'Malcolm X'
Mon., Feb. 2, 8PM on BET
Synopsis: The civil-rights leader (Denzel Washington) rises from criminal to crusader, undergoing a religious conversion while jailed.
What the Critics Said: Critics were generally impressed with Spike Lee's three-hour epic, with much of the praise going to Washington's towering performance.
Our Take: Washington owns the movie in arguably a career-best performance; 16 years later, we still can't believe he lost the Oscar to Al Pacino ('Scent of a Woman').

'Forrest Gump'Tue., Feb. 3, 7PM on HBO
Synopsis: JFK, LBJ, Vietnam, Watergate and other history is seen through the eyes of an Alabama man (Tom Hanks) with an IQ of 75.
Oscar trivia: Tom Hanks won a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in the film -- his second in two years (he previously won for the film 'Philadelphia').
Our Take: Much of what happens in the film is implausible. But Hanks' Gump is so endearing that the film's sentiment will eventually sneak up on you. Just don't forget to bring the tissues.
