The Office: Stress Relief

by Jay Black, posted Feb 1st 2009 11:50PM
I have it on good authority that that's not his real forehead.(S05E13) Let me ask you a philosophical question: is it possible for a sitcom to be funny and still not be a very good episode? Technically, all a sitcom is trying to do is make you laugh; if it accomplishes that, it's hard to argue that it's a bad episode. Yet, despite above average guffawing throughout tonight's Office, nothing about it worked that well.

The cold open perfectly encapsulates what I'm talking about. Dwight's actions officially crossed the line from odd-but-likable-doofus to dead-eyed sociopath. I get that Dwight's a little out there, but when it becomes plausible that a sitcom character might have a basement pit filled up with hitchhikers he's planning to use to make a girl-suit, you have to take pause and consider how he's being handled. That fire was stupid, unbelievable, and ridiculous.

But it was damn funny. You see my dilemma ...

The rest of the episode stuttered down the same path as the cold open, consistently combining odd pacing and awkward characterization with bursts of laugh-out-loud comedy.

Take Jim and Pam's subplot, for example. This is the first we've heard where they're at in their relationship in months, and the best the writers can give us is an off-camera drama between Pam's heretofore unseen parents? And, on top of that, they try to wring some unearned pathos out of it by having Jim's advice turn out to actually be sweet. (Was there a person on the planet that didn't see that coming, by the way? My 18 month-old son called that "twist," and he only knows how to say like ten words).

And yet, if you can't laugh at a steamy post-bath makeout session between Jack Black and Cloris Leachman, there's a good chance you're dead inside. Plus Andy's reactions to their in-depth "movie review" were fantastic.

So how do you review that?

If tonight's episode were a reality TV character, it would be one of those wannabe MILFs on The Real Housewives of Orange County. Each part was surgically polished to a kind of bottle-blond perfection, but when you consider the big picture, you realize there's not really that much to get excited about. Also, it might try to sleep with you to steal your youth.

Other stuff:

-- The spontaneous "Staying Alive" musical bit was the highlight of the episode. I'm a sucker for unexpected singalongs in my sitcoms (anyone else remember the "We Will Rock You" cold open on Cheers?)

-- A close second was Creed not knowing what a text was.

-- Another predictable but funny piece was Michael's self-thrown roast. Not since Bob Saget defended the honor of the Olsen twins has the point of a roast been missed so completely: the second Michael announced that there was going to be a roast, you knew his feelings were going to be hurt. That said, it was nice to see him get a round of real laughter from Stanley and the rest of the office crew; as a comedian with self-esteem issues that make Michael Scott seem like Steve McQueen, I can fully appreciate how good those laughs can feel.

-- "If his thing were an iPod, it'd be a shuffle."

-- It was nice to see a little bit of accountability being added into the mix with Dwight being called up to corporate to answer for his crimes. I felt a little bad for Michael that one week after David Wallace complimented his fine leadership, he's immediately back to being yelled at for allowing shenanigans to go on. In the words of MC Skat Cat: it's two steps forward, two steps back.

Your thoughts are always appreciated in the comments, especially this week!

What I like is how different everyone's take on the episode was. I mean, I read reviews for the Office on this site and another site (typically this site is always has an issue with the episode while the other site generally likes the things this site has issues with). It's amusing really. The other site believed this could have been one of the best episodes of the season.

Personally, I don't really see the point in overly scrutinizing the show or what not. I just watch it, and enjoy it. Maybe i'm too simple, but what that leaves me with is a great episode everytime that i enjoy and love and generally thought was funny. It's better on my side I think.

I agree with you.

And if you didn't laugh at the cold open, you must be dead inside. And it's not that out of character for Dwight, you know, the guy who hides knives in the office...

I have to say I loved the opening of the episode with Dwight
starting the fire. The whole scene was great. People running around like crazy people was just awesome.

Now I will say the bootleg video was crap and I have to wonder why they had people like Jack Black come on the show at all.

I heard Jack Black was to be a cousin of Dwight a shrwoot I know I spelled it wrong. I loved that idea or the one that said Creed was to play Jack Black's Uncle. He would not be Jack Black in the show but still either of those two would have been better then the thing we got.

There needs to be an episode about Creed we have almost got one for every body and He would be perfect.

As for Alba I heard she and Dwight were to be making out and it was to make Angela angry. But instead her plot was bad too.

All I heard for weeks on end was Jack and Alba would be on the Office and never one time did I hear Cloris Leachman yet she had a bigger part then Alba.

Even on the NBC site it only talked about those two. I really did not care to see Jack & Cloris getting it on. That was just plain sick. I really do not know why she was in it at all Jack and Alba would have been fine. But what was the reason she was in it too.

Almost the whole episode I loved. Dwight whole fire safety thing made the show great. Plus Mkie made the show good too. I really can't help but wonder why they had the whole bootleg video thing in the show at all because all it did was make the great episode not as great as it could have been without that added crap.

But if it would have been like Jack as the cousin to Dwight that would have been fun but instead we viewers get crap instead.

Anyone else notice Micheal's dyslexia on the cost of the dummy? Another hint at why the Scranton Office numbers are do much better than everyone else's?

"Stanley tried to die just to get a-waaaayyyy!"

I replayed it several times, and then my roommate asked to do the same when we watched it today :-D

Sorry, but I refuse to ever again watch the opening scene of this episode. Seriously? Dwight LIGHTS A FUCKING FIRE AND TRAPS HIS EMPLOYEES WITH IT and gets a slap on the wrist? That was the most unbelievable thing I've seen in my life. I know it's a TV show but for Christ's sake people, there is no excuse. It wasn't funny, it wasn't shocking, it was stupid and pathetic.

Did Pam's Dad look like David Ogden Stiers? He is a great actor.

Loved this episode. I think to many people think that each episode has to be a 10. If the season were like cable and only 13 episodes, maybe every episode would be a 9 or a 10, but with 22 episodes there will be a few that are only a 6.

I don't look for anything on network TV to be more than a few laughs. Cable is where I go for real groundbreaking Drama and Comedy. The Networks are appealing to the lowest common denominator. Cable is looking for the few and dedicated. If "The Office" was on USA, TNT, or FX, you would see a completely different show, much closer to the BBC version that some of you seem to want.

Thank you for reading...

How about Angela having potential to be a stand-up comic. Look a show that comes on as a comedy and makes you laugh is a success. Rating the plot is just two steps below stupidity. Nobody has any money, our political representatives are robbing us, and shows like The Real Housewives of whatever are multiplying like rabbits. Just laugh at it.JEEZ
