Cherry Jones(S07E07) "You're telling me my husband's gone missing?" - President Taylor

The plot is starting to shift. We're one hour past the quarter mark for the season and Dubaku's well laid out plan has fallen apart already. I speculated last week that it seemed as though this season was taking on a dynamic similar to season three and it's looking more and more like the entire plot will be making an even greater shift by the midway point. I don't expect Dubaku to be around much longer than that.

I mean, honestly, do you? Especially now that we know how the guy lives? Terrorist by day, "Sam" by night. He came home to an apartment, loosened his shirt after a long day at the "office," threw his keys on the kitchen table, and said hello to the pretty waitress he's sleeping with down the hall. The only thing missing a was comically mismatched roommate ready to berate him for drinking all the milk again. He's not very scary anymore.

So his plan fell apart - it was to be expected. Tony, Jack, Renee, Bill, and Chloe tracked the Matobos to an office building in downtown DC and that was the end of it. They stormed into Iké's makeshift command center, killed a bunch of his goons, and destroyed the CIP device. Except for the death of the plant manager at the insecticide processing facility, there were no other casualties from the final CIP attack. I'd say Team Jack was pretty successful. Of course Dubaku got away (walked right out of the building and no one batted an eye), but that was to be expected too.

This all leads up to a something that's been bugging me since the beginning of the season - even with the addition of Jack and Renee, Tony, Bill, and Chloe were never going to be able to do this all on their own. They still blew their cover and Dubaku got away. Had the police been able to arrest them, it all would have been over. So who can they trust? There's only one logical pick - the President herself. I doubt very much that Taylor is going to turn into Logan V2.0 and anyone else we've met could potentially end up being a mole. With Henry now captured, it seems likely that Taylor will be willing to grant amnesty to Jack for his actions all day and the hunt for Henry will get a green-light.

More thoughts on hour seven...

  • Dubaku called Gedge and Vossler directly. So were the two of them reporting right to him? Perhaps there isn't someone above them in the Secret Service or Taylor's cabinet that was calling the shots? It seems unlikely, but then again it does make some sense because Dubaku probably had an easier time turning two low level SS agents with a couple bagfuls of Sangalan diamonds.
  • Can we just start calling the FBI CTU instead? I could help but laugh when Janis demanded that Sean open her a fresh "socket."
  • It's been mentioned numerous times now, but are we ever going to find out any of the other bad things Tony did? I know Jack is giving him the benefit of the doubt because of what he's doing now, but how bad are we talking here? Is Tony really redeemable at this point? Remains to be seen.
  • Taylor told Ethan about Matobo! Either he's a mole or he'll tell someone who is. Obviously.
  • I wonder what made Larry finally admit that Renee is dead to Ethan? Why did he concede so suddenly?
  • I had completely forgotten about Michael Latham. I thought he was dead already. Oh well... he's dead now.

So what's next? It's looking like Jack is going to be "activated" by the President and once that happens, all bets are off. We still haven't really gotten any clues regarding the endgame of the season, other than the Redemption knowledge of Jonas Hodge's (Jon Voight) involvement. I doubt very much that making money off the Sangalan genocide is the only thing at stake.

A very weak episode.... must be the curse of Brannon Braga who can suck the life out of any good concept. So our big, bad terrorist has an apartment and dates a waitress? This is almost as bad as Kim and the cougar in season one. The President looks about as weak as they come... and as clueless as Dubya.

I would have really enjoyed this episode if "the storming of the castle" had happened in actual lighting so I could see the action... Since I didn't have my night vision goggles handy the episode was a bit of a letdown for me.

LOL at the "socket" request. Straight out of the last 6 seasons of the show.

Who is paying for all the equipment Tony, Bill, and Chloe are using? Did they fund their operation themselves?

Chloe's home office IMO.

I was thinking the same thing about the FBI being CTU. Janis asking Sean to open a socket and Sean questioning if Larry is fit to be in charge. I wish they would retire that play already. Maybe they will try that on Prez Taylor next since they have her husband now and her cabinet is corrupt.

Jonathan-I think your suspicions about a plot "shift" like season three are right on. A year ago Mike Ausiello hinted that the first 10 or so episodes would have one storyline, and the second half of the season would have a different storyline. I'm patiently waiting for the "twist" that will turn everything upside down.

The major thing I liked last night was the casting of Tom Irwin as the plant manager. My mom went "It's Claire Danes' dad from My So-Called Life!" The producers did this intentionally-Irwin's character's name on that show was Graham Chase. We've met characters on 24 named Graham and Chase.

I thought it was perfect casting as well. How great was that exchange between him and Janis when she called him on calling her "Sugar"? She appears tough on the outside but really is a sweetheart underneath that facade. If he wasn't headed for his inevitable doom, she would have read him the riot act! Well played by all!

Dubaku used the classic Marwan-ian escape plan: stairs!

There near the end, where the President was being told by her COS that her husband had gone missing? Watching Cherry Jones go through 3 or 4 emotions without saying a word was the best bit of acting I've seen in quite some time. She went from disbelief at what she was being told, to pissed that no one told her sooner, to fear for her husband's safety, to resolution that she would get him back but that she couldn't worry about it right then, all in about 10 seconds.

Oh No! Henry Taylor was kim-napped!

Anyways, I think Dubaku is a lot like Logan's chief of staff in season 5: CofS was part of the conspiracy, but did not know Logan was the mastermind. Dubaku, probably just does not know who else in the gov't is on his side.

I don't think Larry has given up hope on Renee, I think he just told Ethan she was dead to cut the FBI some slack.

Lastly, I don't want to know what Tony did, if it turns out to be an infodump. It would be awkward for Tony and Jack to get together and discuss the past over chamomile tea while this is going on.

Hey! I hadn't forgotten about Latham! I'm just glad they tied up this loosen end...

Waste of an actor in John Billingsley. We see him for less than 5 minutes total in 2 episodes...

Agreed ... great actor.

Once I saw him pop up again, I thought: "Ooh boy, he's going to have a bigger role that I originally thought." 5 sec. later: KABOOM!

He was fantastic in Out of Time with Denzel Washington. Thought he was the best part of the movie.
