American Idol: Hollywood Round #2 (Group Night)

by Jane Boursaw, posted Feb 5th 2009 1:30AM

It's group night in Hollywood, and frankly, I don't really get it. I mean, when the contestants get to American Idol, they don't perform as groups that often. And when they do, they're coached and have someone else doing all the choreography and such. Is it that important for them to do it at this stage of the game? Because what usually happens is that some contestants with great voices end up going home because of their awful group.

Anyway, there were plenty of tears, drama, and all-night rehearsals, but it's all good for the ratings.

One of the flakiest contestants ended up being Katrina Darrell, a.k.a. Bikini Girl (yeah, big shock there). She was in a group with Rose Flack, Jasmine Murray and Lauren Barnes. They sang "Mercy" by Duffy, and did a pretty bad job. Katrina made an excuse about having scoliosis and being in high heels all day. The truth is, she just flaked out on the rest of them, went to bed early, and showed up the next morning saying, "I'm here. Teach me what I missed." The nerve! The show must have some rule about not ditching group members, because they should have cut her loose. Subsequently, they did horrible (Rose even forgot the words), and Jasmine was the only one who made it through to the next round.

A group named "White Chocolate" had better luck. Made up of India Morrison, Matt Giraud, Kris Allen and Justin Williams, they sang "I Want You Back" by the Jackson Five, and easily sailed through. They were fun, energetic, and clearly showed that they'd put some time into their rehearsal.

The group that included Michael Sarver (the oil rig guy), Adam Lambert, Matt Brietzke (the welder), and Jesse Langseth also fared well. They sang "Some Kind of Wonderful," and did a great job. The judges raved, and everyone got through to the next round.

Tatiana Del Toro
proved to be a basket case, bordering on psycho. In fact, one of her group members actually called her a pyscho. Tatiana tried to join a different group at the beginning, but then ended up going back to her original group. Her entire group ended up getting through (after a dramatic pause by Paula), but afterwards, Tatiana had a bit of a nervous breakdown, tearfully thanking everyone on the planet and possibly a few other planets.

Oh, and if you ever get to this point in American Idol, don't – I repeat, don't – try to sing your way through to the next round after your group has already sang. Tatiana tried doing that, singing "I wanna get through," but the judges all slapped her down.

Nathaniel Marshall
(the guy with the weird piercing under his lip), Kristin McNamara, and Nancy Wilson had quite a bit of drama throughout the night. At one point, Nathanial reminded me of the "Leave Britney Alone!" guy, because he was just totally losing it. But they pulled it together and prayed (hard) in the wings right before they performed Duffy's "Mercy." It didn't help. They were awful, and Simon said it sounded like the backup singers were trying to sabotage whomever was singing lead. Nathaniel and Kristin went through to the next round, but Nancy went home. Nathaniel tried to hug it out with her, but she wanted no part of it.

So those are the highlights. Danny Gokey's group sang an acappella version of "Somebody to Love," and it was fabulous. All the judges loved it, and Danny's group all went through. Surprisingly (to me anyway), David Osmond ended up going home. You'd think with his connections, he might have a shot at making it in the music biz one way or another.

What are your thoughts? Any favorites from tonight?

I love Danny Gokey, I think he will definitely end up in the finals, he is awesome. Now as far as David Osmond, I was SO sad to see him go home. I don't know why they would have cut him, even if he had laryngitis, they sent plenty of people through who picked bad songs or made a mistake. He had an awesome voice and was a hottie, just because he's from a famous family there was no reason to penalize him. He was starting from scratch just like everyone else. Remember Niko Smith from a few seasons back? His dad was famous, Ozzie Smith. I really think they made a mistake sending him home. Now Tatiana??????? How the hell did she make it through? She is awful and a total psycho!!! I'm not liking how this season is starting off.

I too, would like to have seen David Osmond's group performance. I can't believe his gorgeous voice was not good in group, unless he forgot the words. Hope he comes back as a wild card contestants.

Just when I thought that American Idol was gaining some credibility by showing more of the good auditions as opposed to the "bad," I tuned in to Hollywood Week and had my hopes dashed. Even though this is supposed to be a "singing" competition, AI has seemed to concentrate less on the performances and more on the infighting and backbiting. I'm one of these people that watches AI for the singing; if I'd wanted to watch a show of catfights and meltdowns, I would have watched "Big Brother" (which I gave up on entirely after only five minutes)! Who cares if "Bikini Girl" didn't want to get out of bed the next morning (and, quite frankly, I wasn't sad to see her go). In the future, AI, please, PLEASE focus less on the histrionics and more on the actual singing!

did anyone else think that nancy wilson got the bad end of the deal -- she wanted to practice and no one wanted to. I was actually angry that the other girl got through -- resting her voice??? and she's sick of the drama?

David said on his blog that the laryngitis started around lunch time and his group did not get on stage until ten at night and his voice was really bad by then. I really feel the show could have let people know what had happened to him instead of wasting time on other contestants fighting. I may be wrong but I thought there was another singer on the show one season with the same problem and they got another chance. David is really great, check out his My Space page and listen to the music!

Was also shocked about Donny Osmond (yes I know his name is David but I'll always call him Donny). Was AI doing him a favor by not showing his bad singing, or will he indeed turn back up later in the season. He did have a very compelling story and name recognition, and I thought he would be an immediate front runner when I saw his first audition.
I'm truly puzzled by some of the decisions, and even more so by the show's editing. Several of the characters that they profiled earlier they didn't even show singing, just showed them being kicked off, yet they spend ALL that time on the two whiny groups. They could have gotten the point across with about 5 minutes of footage, we didn't need to keep revisiting it over and over again.

I agree with many of you regarding David Osmond... regardless if you are an Osmond family lover OR hater, David has a wonderful voice plus has the "look" of an idol. He knows what it takes to make it in show business, also. Sad to hear he had laryngitis that day so he sang horribly. Bummer! I hope the judges think about him, at least, for the wild card show. Do you guys think the judges will consider him? He is much better than many of the males singers that made it; much better.

UPDATE: I just read a blog from David Osmond explaining he had contracted laryngitis but he did not know why AI didn't choose to show it.

Fritz:

Although I think Osmond's voice isn't as meaty as one would hope a top contender would be, he seemed to do a serviceable job throughout. A pleasant, likeable, professional fellow that ladies would have probably liked.

I got a feeling they had to find an early, quiet exit for him as to avoid a lot of future "issues."

Far as Tatiana Del Crier, if she could control herself for a few moments... she has some decent singing tools and is nice to the eyes. Too bad girlfriend has the cognition of a Merkur and is operating Porche-like hardware.

Oil rig man is an interesting dark horse as is young Stevie Wright.

it's pretty clear that you have group week for one reason alone - to create conflict. It is good TV

Danny is really the frontrunner - he was my first rewind of the season

I really cared about Danny and Jamar's group because they sat themselves away from all the drama, practiced their asses off, and harmonized gorgeously! (If only all the groups worked like that. Of course, everything would be boring, I suppose). So not only do Danny and Jamar deserve to go forward, I am more in love with them because they 200% avoided the bs (such as "The Tatiana").
They keep showing a glimpse of Adam Lambert (I call him goth-head 'cuz his head looks goth) from CA, and that boy can sing. I am looking forward to see him top12 - absolutely no excuse not to.
I am loving that India can sing and rap. I think she is a possibly cool American Idol contestant. Would love to see her in top12.
Was sad to see tattoosOEmily go though.
