HBO is big on Big Love
In the immortal words of Lennon and McCartney, all you need is love. That's especially true for the Hendrickson family of Utah, also known as Big Love. The polygamist clan that's been the center of more complicated stories than most daytime dramas has taken hold and HBO has given Big Love a fourth season renewal. The Tom Hanks produced series recently returned to HBO after an extended lay-off -- thanks in part to the Writers Strike -- and it's come back stronger than ever. I know for me, it's one of the main reasons I haven't dropped HBO.
In fact, Big Love is one of those series that is actually getting better as it unwinds. The first season was not a big hit, but because of HBO's faith in Hanks and company, Big Love was given a second year. And now its third is doing big numbers in the ratings. Even with the competition of Sunday's Super Bowl, last Sunday's episode was up 29% from its January season premiere.
If you're not already watching Big Love, do yourself a favor and give it a try. The acting, starting with Bill Paxton, Jeanne Tripplehorn, Chloe Sevigny and Ginnifer Goodwin is superb, and the stories are so complicated and fascinating that you can't help but get caught up with it. Will Bill take a fourth wife? Will Roman Grant be convicted of forcing young women into marriage? And what is Lois going to do with Bill's father now that she seems to have changed her mind about killing him?
