The Biggest Loser's Joelle just confuses me

by Jason Hughes, posted Feb 6th 2009 3:32PM
The Biggest Loser': Couples 2 - Joelle & CarlaFor five weeks now we've watched Joelle (left) at The Biggest Loser ranch. She makes odd expressions, stands in silence a lot when asked a direct question, and when she does respond it seems like she's just trying to use ten-dollar words and catchphrases. But she just strings them together haphazardly, creating nonsense. She never really answers anything. I've seen a lot of different kinds of people in real life and on reality shows on television, and I just can't wrap my brain around this woman.

Clearly she has motivation problems, as evidenced by her continuing lack of effort (except for one week) on the show. Poor teammate Carla was reduced to screaming at her during what was supposed to be a beneficial reward for the both of them. Even Bob completely lost his cool and yelled at her; the first time he's ever lost it with a contestant. I suspect that Joelle's defense mechanism when she's attacked is to shut down, not unlike what a deer does when yon headlights shine into its eyes. It makes her come across very oddly on my television screen.

I don't think Joelle is stupid, or even mean-spirited. I just think she may be wired differently than the rest of us. What's fascinating to me is that she and Carla developed a friendship in the first place, as they seem to be very different people. And yet Joelle "pushed" the week she needed to in order to ensure Carla would be able to return to the ranch. After that, however, she fell back to her old ways and managed to put up a big goose egg on the scales sending herself and poor Carla home.

It seems to me that for the past two weeks, two of the people who needed to be on the show the most have bit the dust due to partners who just didn't seem to care. David as much as came out and said he didn't want to be there, helping seal Daniel's fate last week. And then this week Joelle doomed Carla by failing to answer the question of whether or not she wanted to be there and being so ... Joelle for five weeks. Meanwhile, Ron and Mike pleaded out two weeks in a row to hang in there, but the boys have their work cut out for them.

The saddest thing, though, was learning that the show has destroyed the friendship Joelle and Carla did have. Again, I'm not sure what kind of friendship that was; did they go clubbing together or just happen to sit near one another at work and share pleasantries. Still, it was difficult to see the old wounds bubble up to the surface when they did meet up for the cameras for the first time since their elimination. Carla wanted to say her piece (of course she did!) but Joelle would have none of it and left. It was very cold, but emotionally cold seems to be a specialty for Joelle. I don't know, I just don't get her.

It seemed like Joelle is a graduate of the Sarah Palin School of Vocabulary and Public Speaking.

....or the Joe Biden "I don't make a lick of sense whenever I open my mouth" Asshat Academy.

Joelle is just kind of there. I don't get how she even made it into the competition.

As much as I was glad Joelle was gone I have to remind myself that we are seeing an "edited" version of each of these people.

While I don't doubt that Joelle is an odd duck Reality stars are at the mercy of Producers and Editors as to how they are ultimately portrayed.

Was sad to see Carla go but Joelle definitely "seemed" to not want to be there.

I know.....maybe Danny and Carla can come back as friends who can sympathize with each other for having bad partners the first time around!

Joelle strikes me as somewhat sociopathic. She's not deliberately mean, but she is completely self-centred, manipulative and a pathological liar. She's so used to lying that she doesn't seem to realize she is doing it. She also strikes me as not particularly bright and an extremely dull person. Something happened to make Joelle this way, probably in childhood.

I know it's been a while since this episode, but we have T-Vo. Plus, I've been thinking about this Joelle thing for a while, and I think you're completely on the right track. I think Joelle has probably been treated all her life as if she means nothing or close to nothing and unfortunately has developed the skills to replicate these kinds of relationships in all aspects of her life. This is why she was able to bring out a side of Bob that no one has ever seen before. It's also probably why her friendship with Carla seemed abnormal. Carla assumed a parental role with Joelle because she acted like a child. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if that has been the dynamics of their entire friendship. This experience was probably the last straw for Carla. It would have been interesting and maybe necessary for Joelle to have had to receive mandatory, intensive daily psychotherapy to deal with the mental health component of all of this while she was on the ranch. I think she probably could be diagnosed with a personality disorder, but she reminds me of children with Oppositional Defiant Disorder.

This is a show that should be reviewed weekly.

If you remember, on the first episode she said she still lives with her mother. I just think she hasn't matured beyond 16...she's in constant need of affirmation and reinforcements. Glad she's gone. I can't beleive she's lasted this long.

Joelle is stupid. Here she had a great chance and she didn't appreciate it. Her treatment of Carla was disgraceful. So glad she's off.

Her after-show interviews seem to indicate that they really weren't close friends.
All the piling on was disgraceful behavior. The constant meanness was uncalled for.

My wife and I have been wondering this for some time ourselves... she obviously doesn't "get" anything about the show. I suspect she and Carla weren't really friends in the sense that normal people would define the term -- I figure they may have known each other enough to put in their audition for the show, but friends? I don't see it. For that matter, I can't imagine anyone wanting to be friends with Joelle unless they're brain-damaged, too!
