'Terminator' Q&A With Brian Austin Green

by Angie Argabrite, posted Feb 12th 2009 9:30AM
"That's not even a fair fight. That's bringing a gun to a knife fight ... "

Brian Austin Green made his name on the original 'Beverly Hills 90210,' as the dorky one, David Silver. After 10 years of teen-TV stardom, the actor took a break, making occasional TV movies and guest spots on TV shows, appearing in the short-lived Freddie Prinze Jr. sitcom, 'Freddie,' and building up a resume behind the scenes as a producer and director.

In the past few years, Green has found himself back in the spotlight, first as the fiance of mega-hot 'Transformers' star Megan Fox, and now as one of the stars of Fox's buzz-worthy sci-fi series 'Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles' (Fri., 8PM, Fox).

AOL TV chatted with the Notorious B.A.G. about his wedding plans, who'd win in a fight between a Terminator and a Transformer, returning to '90210' -- not! -- and what he hates more than the paparazzi (answer: nothing). -- By Angie Argabrite

    1. Were you a fan of the 'Terminator' series before you got on the show?

I was a huge fan. 'Terminator 2' was one of my all-time favorite films. It was the first time I had seen visual effects on that level. You know, the liquid Terminator and the T1000; [it] was just phenomenal what James Cameron had done with it. And that was just one of the funnest films; still when it's on I watch it. I love that movie.

    2. Do you wish they'd write your character into one of the movies?

[Laughs] I'd be lying if I said no. I'd love it. I'd love to do what we're doing right now on a grander scale. But at the same time, you know, this is a dream job. It's a dream television show. I don't know if I could actually look for something cooler, or find anything cooler than this right now.

    3. You were supposed to be a guest star and then your character, Derek Reese, became a regular, how did that happen?

The fans liked the character. And the writers liked the character; they realized that they could use him a lot more than they had originally thought. Originally, six episodes was the deal ... and he's just an interesting character, I think.

    4. The show is now on Fridays, how do you feel about that?

Originally I figured it was the kiss of death; most of the time when shows go to Fridays that's usually the send-off [laughs]. But then I talked to friends of mine up at Fox who were telling me that they were really excited about it up there, and they told me about the pairing with 'Dollhouse,' and they reminded me that 'The X-Files' wasn't doing well until they moved it to Friday nights. Then I realized that it does give us our own night. We're not up against shows like 'Monday Night Football' and 'Dancing With the Stars.' I hope that it allows our audience to watch the show when it airs, because at this point it's just a numbers game ... I'm hoping this gives us a reason to be around for at least another season, maybe two.

    5. You've said you probably won't go back to 'Beverly Hills 90210,' but now that your '90210' wife Tori Spelling is on the show, is there any chance you might make an appearance?

I don't know ... it's hard, it's a hard thing for me. It was a great 10 years, but I kind of feel like unless there's a really cool reason for it, or if they've written something really clever in an interesting way of bringing the character back ... I really don't want to just walk out and just be David Silver in the Peach Pit.

    6. What do you think David Silver would be like now, as a guy in his mid-30s?

I would assume broke. I think he's probably completely broke cause he's been trying to do music forever, and everybody knows you don't really makes money in music -- only the top, like, 2. So, I'm sure he's broke, [but] I guess he could be DJing on some goofy morning show or something ... but nah, I don't think he's the most successful person.

    7. Do you watch the new '90210'?

I haven't seen it yet ... I didn't watch '90210' when I was on it. So for me to watch it now just seems sort of ... you know, I would question myself.

    8. What is the difference between being on a popular show now and back when you were on '90210'?

I have a different reason for working now, having a 6 year old [Kassius, with ex Vanessa Marcil], I'm not in it just for the party and excitement of it. It's a job for me, and I want to show up and do the best I can and work as long as I can -- so I can enjoy life when I'm not working. And it's a much different audience on a show like this compared to the audience that we had for '90210.' Sci-fi fans, and the fans of shows like this one, are really loyal and they'll show up for every sort of autograph signing that we do, and they're the most respectful and kind people. They bring really nice things that they've either drawn or written, and they stand in line and wait their turn, and they're really complimentary, and at the end of the day, for a lot of shows of this genre, they're the reason that the shows stay on as long as they do.

    9. You mentioned your son -- how do you balance having a child and working so much?

The best I can [laughs]. I spend as much time with him as I can. I bring him to set as often as I can ... It's really child friendly; we're on the Warner Bros. lot ... They've got a store full of all the Warner Bros. cartoons and shows and movies; there're parks within the lot, so he runs around and enjoys himself ... He loves the show, he's a big sci-fi guy, his favorite thing in the world is 'Star Wars,' so this show kind of fits into what he loves ... He has way more fun when we're shooting future stuff in the underground tunnel system; he loves running through those tunnels, it reminds him of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ... He thinks I'm pretty cool. He'll find out otherwise eventually, but he's still young enough to think that Dad's cool. He'll hate me in another couple years. I gotta get it all in while I can ... I love kids. I would love to have more at some point.
