One thing I can't stand is an illogical commercial. I'm not sure why I seem to notice inconsistency or silliness in commercials as I get older, but it bothers me a lot more than it did when I was a kid. For example, the new Valentine's Day commercial from Hallmark. It shows a couple in a car going somewhere, and the woman gives her hubby one of those talking greeting cards. The card plays "I Can't Fight This Feeling" by REO Speedwagon, and the tune makes the couple think of the first time they met at a concert in the 80s.But their meeting doesn't make any sense, as you'll see in the video after the jump (sorry for the the little piece of another commercial which airs at the start of the video).
OK, so the couple met at a concert over 20 years ago. The husband was the lead singer and she was in the audience. But wait a second, the song the band is playing is the same song that is playing in the card the wife gave the husband. So this husband was either the lead singer of REO Speedwagon (which would be news to Kevin Cronin) or the couple met at some weird competition where full bands go onstage and lip synch to a song. Um...huh?
Or how about this ad? It's the new ad featuring those guys who are obsessed with Raisin Bran.
Alright, so these guys hang out all night so they can be the first in line to get boxes of the new Raisin Bran Extra (instead of camping out all night for concert tickets or a football game, these guys camp out all night for cereal). That's not the illogical part. It's the part where one of the guys says "is it true, does it really have cranberries?"
That doesn't make any sense. If you've seen this series of commercials, these guys have gone across the country and practically given up their jobs to follow the world of Raisin Bran. There's no possible way these guys would not know that the new cereal contains raisins. In fact, these nuts would probably know someone at Kellogg's and could probably get a sample of the cereal before it was released. Hell, they'd have a raisinbranfans.com blog and would know all of the news in advance.
I mean, they've even gone Kellogg's HQ to pitch taglines.
But these aren't the first people to be outrageously obsessed with Raisin Bran cereal products. This commercial from 1978 features a couple interrupts their wedding day to have a bowl. I'm sure their parents were thrilled.
I guess if this couple are so in-tune with each other that they don't mind running from their wedding vows to eat some cereal, the marriage is going to work out just fine. That's true love. I bet they're still together today, probably eating Quaker Oatmeal now, washed down with some Ensure. Happy Valentine's Day!
